Lovepreet Singh added a silver medal to India’s tally in the men’s weightlifting 110+ kg category during the Commonwealth Games. His performance featured a remarkable 176 kg snatch, a new Games record, and an overall lift of 388 kg, bringing India’s weightlifting achievements to a close.

Despite leading the competition initially, Lovepreet fell short by just one kilogram to New Zealand’s David Andrew Liti, who won gold with a total of 389 kg. Lovepreet began strongly with a 10 kg advantage but could not secure the required lift in the final clean and jerk attempt.

His performance marked an improvement from his bronze at the previous Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham. This silver contributed to India’s impressive haul of eight weightlifting medals during the event, including one gold and six silvers.

Seema Kaliramna Claims Bronze in Discus Throw

In athletics, Seema Kaliramna won a bronze medal in the women’s discus throw with a best mark of 58.65 meters. The 27-year-old faced a challenging competition, recording three consecutive fouls before securing her place on the podium with a successful third-round throw.

Seema’s achievement is noteworthy, as she returned to competition after giving birth last year while pursuing a PhD. Despite her last three attempts not registering a valid mark, she managed to hold onto her third-place position.

Jamaica’s Samantha Hall claimed gold with a throw of 61.66 meters, while the silver medal went to Canada’s Julia Tunks, who recorded a distance of 60.67 meters. India’s Nidhi Rani narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth with a best throw of 55.67 meters.

Tejaswin Shankar and Other Athletics Updates

Tejaswin Shankar kept his medal hopes alive in the decathlon by finishing the opening day in second place with 4,339 points. He performed particularly well in the high jump, clearing 2.15 meters and earning 944 points.

India’s efforts in track events faced setbacks as Animesh Kujur and Vishal TK exited in the semifinals. Kujur placed sixth in the men’s 200 meters with a time of 20.65 seconds, while Vishal finished sixth in the men’s 400 meters, clocking 46.33 seconds.

Neeraj Chopra also advanced to the final of the men’s javelin throw, along with teammates Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh, after navigating difficult conditions during the qualification round. Chopra’s best throw was 79.61 meters, which secured his fifth-place finish.

Continued Disappointments in Other Events

India’s hope for a medal in the men’s shot put continued to elude them, as Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill finished fifth and seventh, respectively. Despite Toor being viewed as a potential medal contender, he could not capture a podium finish.

New Zealand’s Tom Walsh set the early pace in the shot put event, while Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi ultimately took gold with a throw of 21.07 meters. India’s para cycling team faced disappointments as well; Lisha Das and the men’s team sprint unit failed to progress in their respective events.

As the Commonwealth Games continued, India’s overall performance has been noted for both its successes and challenges across various disciplines. The depth of talent displayed, particularly in weightlifting, offers signs of a promising future for Indian athletics.
