Bangladesh: Sharif Osman Hadi’s brother accuses Muhammad Yunus’ interim government of murder

The CSR Journal Magazine

Slain Bangladeshi youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi’s brother Sharif Omar bin Hadi has accused the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government of getting his brother murdered. “You are the ones who had Hadi murdered,” the deceased leader’s brother made explosive allegations, putting the Yunus government in the dock.

Bangladesh is burning with anger over the death of Sharif Osman Hadi. In this situation, Hadi’s brother, Sharif Omar bin Hadi, has become vocal, alleging that the interim Yunus government of Bangladesh is responsible for his death. He was seen expressing his anger at the ‘Martyrdom Oath’ programme in Shahbag on Tuesday afternoon. He also complained that six days have passed since his brother’s death, but the government has still done nothing.

Sharif Omar bin Hadi became emotional while talking about his deceased brother. He said, “How to conduct movements on the streets, how to uphold freedom and sovereignty, how to become a leader of the people; Osman Hadi has proven this to us.”

Meanwhile, Abdullah Al Jaber, the member secretary of Bangladesh’s ‘Inqilab Mancha’ (which was headed by Sharif Osman Hadi), reminded the Yunus government of the 30-working-day deadline. It was demanded through a press statement issued last Monday that the killers of Hadi must be identified and arrested within a month. That point was reiterated again. Undoubtedly, the pressure is increasing on the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government in this situation.

Who was Sharif Osman Hadi?

Sharif Osman Hadi was a prominent Bangladeshi political activist and a central figure in the 2024 July Uprising that led to the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He was the founder and spokesperson of ‘Inqilab Mancha’, a radical student-led socio-cultural and political platform.

On December 12, 2025, Hadi was shot in the head by masked assailants while launching his election campaign in the Bijoynagar area of central Dhaka. After initially receiving treatment in Dhaka, he was airlifted to Singapore General Hospital for advanced care. He succumbed to his injuries on December 18, 2025, at the age of 32.

Sharif Osman Hadi died around 9:45 PM on Thursday while undergoing treatment in Singapore. Following his death, unrest spread to various parts of Bangladesh. As the night progressed, protesters arrived at the offices of several prominent Bangladeshi media outlets, including ‘Prothom Alo’ and ‘The Daily Star’, and vandalized them.

Hadi was a potential independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency. He was shot in the Box Culvert area of Bijoynagar while returning home by rickshaw after offering prayers. He was immediately admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Later, he was transferred to Singapore. According to police sources, assailants on a motorcycle shot him. However, the identity of the attackers remains unknown.

Hadi, a prominent youth leader and former student activist, had planned to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming elections scheduled in February.

Hindu youth lynched following Hadi’s killing

On December 18, 2025, a 25-year-old Hindu garment factory worker named Dipu Chandra Das was lynched by a mob in Mymensingh city, Bangladesh. The killing occurred during a period of intense national unrest following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi.

Dipu Chandra Das was lynched and killed on Thursday (December 16) following vague allegations of blasphemy. At a press conference in Mymensingh on Saturday, RAB-14 commander Naimul Hasan said the violence began inside the factory itself. Instead of calling the police and saving him, the youth was forced to resign by his factory supervisors, pushed out of his workplace, and handed over to an enraged mob of Islamists that beat him to death, hung his body and set fire to it. His colleagues reportedly joined the mob in killing him.

Shocking details have emerged in the lynching of the 27-year-old Hindu youth who was employed at a garment factory named Pioneer Knitwears (BD) Limited in Dubaliapara area of Habirbari Union, Bhaluka, Mymensingh. Dipu Chandra Das was killed over blasphemy claims, regarding which no evidence has been found yet, as per Bangladeshi authorities. 12 people were arrested on Sunday December 21, in connection with the lynching of the Hindu youth in Bangladesh, The Daily Star newspaper reported, quoting police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) sources.

The deceased Dipu Chandra was the son of Rabi Chandra Das of Mokamiakanda village in Banihala Union of Tarakanda Upazila. His brother, Opu Chandra Das, filed a case on Friday against 140 to 150 unidentified persons.
