The escalating security crisis in Balochistan has prompted intense scrutiny within the provincial assembly, where lawmakers have voiced alarm over the government’s rapid loss of control over law and order. This concern was articulated during a recent session, leading to a collective call for action from both ruling and opposition members.

During the assembly meeting, which was led by Speaker Abdul Khaliq Achakzai, senior provincial minister Mir Sadiq Umrani characterised the security situation as dire, drawing attention to the significant threats faced not only by ordinary citizens but by elected officials as well. He suggested that if the government could not ensure safety for its citizens, there was little justification for lawmakers to remain in their posts.

Umrani expressed his belief that the province was experiencing conditions akin to civil war, underscoring the rising instances of violence, including attacks on police stations and increasing extortion demands from armed groups. He recounted personal experiences of attacks on his residence in Dera Murad Jamali, highlighting that even a provincial minister was not immune to such threats.

Ministerial Security Measures and Legislative Proposals Discussed

The situation has become so precarious that major highways are reportedly unsafe, which has significantly disrupted public transport and isolated various districts. In response, Umrani urged the assembly to consider legislative reforms aimed at tackling these security challenges and addressing bureaucratic impediments that may affect effective governance.

Speaker Abdul Khaliq Achakzai acknowledged the validity of concerns surrounding administrative interference and stated that criticism regarding the deteriorating security environment could be interpreted as a direct indictment of the provincial government. He recognised the urgent need for a comprehensive response to restore order and public confidence.

Home Minister Zia Langove confirmed that the current security conditions were not satisfactory, further admitting that the provincial government had challenges to navigate. In defence of the existing measures, he mentioned that assembly members were assigned six guards each, and ministers received eight security personnel. His comments indicated a recognition of the gravity of the situation, but they also raised questions about the effectiveness of such security arrangements.

Call for Political Unity Against Militant Groups

As the situation worsens, the Home Minister appealed for greater cooperation among political parties to openly denounce militant groups operating in Balochistan. His call for solidarity among various factions highlights the complexities of addressing security concerns amid political differences, suggesting that a unified front may be essential for enhancing the law and order situation in the province.
