Atul Kulkarni Announces One-Day Hunger Strike Advocating for Sonam Wangchuk

The CSR Journal Magazine

Actor Atul Kulkarni has declared his intention to observe a one-day hunger strike on July 16, 2026, from his residence to show solidarity with educator and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. This decision comes as Wangchuk enters the 19th day of his own indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, where he is advocating for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over allegations of irregularities in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) exam.

In a video message released on July 12, Kulkarni urged the government to engage in dialogue with Wangchuk, stressing the need for immediate discussions. He has called upon individuals who resonate with Wangchuk’s concerns to join him in the hunger strike. “I want to connect with the pain that Sonam ji and his associates are experiencing,” he stated, emphasising the importance of sensitivity from the government regarding the situation.

Details of the Hunger Strike

Kulkarni elaborated on the motivations behind his hunger strike, noting two primary reasons for his actions. The first is a personal connection to the struggle faced by Wangchuk and his collaborators, while the second is a plea for the government to address the situation with the seriousness it merits. He expressed his belief that the current circumstances may involve misunderstandings that have hindered effective communication between the activists and the government.

Setting forth his appeal, Kulkarni insisted, “My request to the government is that they should begin this dialogue without delay.” His message underlines a collective yearning for compassion and understanding from those in positions of power. This call to action resonates with his hopes for a positive outcome in the ongoing protests.

The actor further encouraged others to partake in the one-day hunger strike, reinforcing the idea that communal efforts could amplify their message. “If you find these reasons valid… then share this reel and try observing a one-day hunger strike tomorrow as well,” he urged, appealing to the public for support.

Community and Celebrity Support for Wangchuk

In recent days, Wangchuk has garnered backing from several celebrities, including Shabana Azmi, Abhay Deol, Zeenat Aman, Anurag Kashyap, and Omi Vaidya. Their involvement emphasises a growing concern around the NEET examination irregularities and the pressing demands put forth by Wangchuk and his supporters, known as the Cockroach Janata Party.

Wangchuk is currently entrenched in his protest, which is focused on calling for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in response to claims of paper leaks associated with the NEET-UG exam conducted on May 3. The solidarity expressed by various public figures illustrates the broadening discourse surrounding educational integrity and governance in India.

Kulkarni’s announcement serves as a reminder of the ongoing issues impacting students and their futures. By spotlighting Wangchuk’s fight, the actor not only aligns himself with the movement but also calls for an urgent governmental response. The situation continues to evolve, with many watching to see how these protests will influence discussions in educational policy.
