The CSR Journal Magazine

The Assam government is set to launch a large-scale tree plantation drive, aiming to plant 1 crore saplings on June 5 to mark World Environment Day. This initiative will notably involve over 35 lakh women members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across the state. The state’s commitment towards environmental conservation is central to this initiative, as stated by Assam Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Atul Bora.

Minister Bora highlighted the importance of collective action for ecological balance, indicating that the participation of SHG members is crucial for the success of this plantation drive. He mentioned the government’s ongoing dedication to sustainable development and afforestation as key drivers for this ambitious venture.

As part of the preparations for this event, the minister convened a review meeting in Guwahati with senior officials from the Panchayat and Rural Development Department. The discussions focused on the execution strategy and necessary arrangements for ensuring active public participation in the plantation activities.

Government’s Commitment to Environmental Protection

The Assam government has been prioritising environmental protection under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Minister Bora noted that numerous strategies are in place, including large-scale afforestation and forest reclamation initiatives aimed at enhancing the state’s green cover. The integration of modern technology into conservation efforts further underscores the government’s commitment to protecting the environment.

During the meeting, Bora also informed attendees about the detailed monitoring mechanisms that will be implemented to ensure the smooth operation of the plantation drive. By emphasising public involvement, the government hopes to foster a community spirit surrounding environmental conservation.

In addition to the plantation drive, ongoing initiatives under the Panchayat and Rural Development Department were discussed. One such programme mentioned was the Lakhpati Baideo, which aims to empower women through economic opportunities.

High-Level Participation and Oversight

The review meeting saw participation from high-ranking officials including Additional Chief Secretary B. Kalyan Chakravarthy and Commissioner Keerthi Jalli, among others. Their presence underscores the importance that the government is placing on the plantation drive and highlights the collaborative efforts being made across various departments to ensure its success.

Officials from the Environment and Forest Department also attended the meeting, indicating a unified approach to the plantation initiative. The collaboration among different government sectors aims to streamline efforts towards achieving the targeted sapling plantation and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship within the community.

Through this endeavour, the Assam government aspires not only to plant saplings but also to instil a sense of responsibility towards ecological wellbeing among residents. This plantation drive could serve as a foundational step towards creating a sustainable environment for future generations.
