Assam Family of 3 Found Dead At Home, 13-Year-Old Son’s Body Cut Into Pieces

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a chilling incident, three members of a family were found dead under suspicious circumstances on September 11 in Assam’s Darrang district. The bodies were recovered from a house near the historic Narikali Mandir in the Sipajhar area, raising suspicions of a double murder followed by suicide.

The deceased were identified as Dipak Nath (55), a state government employee, his wife Pratima Nath (46), and their 13-year-old son Dhriti Raj Nath, a Class 7 student.

Son Found Dismembered, Mother’s Throat Slit

Police reports indicate that Pratima Nath was found inside the house with her throat slit, while their son’s dismembered body was discovered nearby, bearing severe injuries, including severed fingers, suggesting he tried to resist the attack. Dipak Nath’s body was found near the boundary wall of the house, dressed for office, but with no visible external injuries.

The gruesome discovery was made by concerned neighbours and relatives who forced entry into the house after receiving no response to calls throughout the day.

Murder Weapon, Slippers, and Phone Found on Terrace

Investigators recovered a sharp weapon suspected to be the murder weapon, along with Dipak Nath’s mobile phone and a pair of slippers from the terrace. According to Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rosy Talukdar, initial evidence suggests that Dipak may have attacked his wife and son with the weapon before ending his own life.

“Since there was no one else in the house, we don’t have any eyewitnesses. Other family members told us they found the bodies in the evening. We are investigating the matter,” said Rosy Talukdar, additional superintendent of police (crime), Darrang.

“No one else was in the house. We are working based on circumstantial evidence and awaiting postmortem reports,” Talukdar stated.

Timeline and Motive Still Unclear

While police suspect a case of murder-suicide, the motive behind the killings is still unknown. According to officials, Dipak was dressed for work but had not gone to office, the child missed school, and Pratima was unreachable by phone all day.

“The wife and son had deep cuts on their face, throat, and other parts of the body, while no external injury was found on the husband. We recovered the suspected murder weapon, his mobile phone, and a pair of slippers from the house,” Talukdar said.

“We are awaiting the postmortem report to establish the timeline of deaths. It appears Dipak may have killed his wife, and his son was possibly killed while trying to save her. But these are only preliminary observations,” Talukdar added.

“It appears the son may have intervened while trying to save his mother and was attacked,” Talukdar said, adding that the severity of the son’s injuries suggests a struggle.

The case has shocked the local community, with friends and relatives still trying to make sense of the tragedy. Police are continuing the investigation to uncover the motive and confirm the exact sequence of events.
