The United States AI sector is increasingly calling for a more cautious approach to the development of advanced AI technologies due to rising fears that unchecked progress might become detrimental to humanity. As the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman has asserted that industry leaders must act responsibly rather than waiting for regulatory guidance from the Trump administration. On a recent post on X, Altman stated, “We welcome a federal framework that sets consistent safety requirements for frontier AI.” He emphasised that immediate actions are needed to establish safety measures until formal policies are in place.

Altman argued that the intense competitive landscape in the United States should not justify reckless behaviour or allow advancements to outpace safety alignment and oversight. He recommended that while government involvement is crucial for international coordination, organisations should proactively adopt safety standards and practices independently.

His comments follow President Donald Trump’s recent dismissal of the need for stricter regulations on AI development. Trump remarked, “We can put guardrails, we can do this and that… but frankly, I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI wins.” This attitude has raised concerns among AI experts who advocate for a more deliberate approach to AI capabilities.

Call for New Standards in AI Safety

Sam Altman has highlighted the necessity of evolving safety standards in the current landscape of AI development, suggesting that existing frameworks like Responsible Scaling Policies are no longer sufficient. Altman supported this notion, stating that the implementation of independent evaluators is a beneficial initiative, and others in the industry, including Elon Musk, have echoed this sentiment.

Conversely, some industry insiders believe that leading AI companies do not require external approval to implement safety measures. David Sacks, a former AI czar in the White House, remarked, “Stop pretending you need anyone else’s permission.” This perspective suggests that firms can initiate responsible practices independently.

Amid these discussions, researchers within leading AI firms have expressed their apprehensions regarding the potential risks associated with more powerful AI models. Jacob Coxon from Anthropic voiced his fears, stating that the developers of AI genuinely believe it could pose existential risks within a decade. Additionally, OpenAI’s Marcus Williams indicated a significant probability of catastrophic outcomes resulting from uncontrolled AI advancements over the next three years.
