An Indian-origin woman has been detained in California in connection with the suspected murders of two friends on August 28. Anila Baby, aged 32, has been identified as the alleged perpetrator of the killings that took place in San Jose and Milpitas, approximately 90 minutes apart. Both victims, Ann Mary Mathew and Anjana Hari, were 35 years old and shared cultural roots in Kerala, India.

Baby’s arrest occurred on the same day as the incidents, with her initially charged in relation to the murder of Hari. However, additional charges were filed against her on September 8, linking her to the death of Mathew as well. Investigators have revealed that Baby and the victims were friends, highlighting a tragic turn in their close relationship.

Details of the Incidents

The first incident unfolded at Mathew’s residence in San Jose, where she was allegedly attacked. Witnesses reported an uninvited visitor arriving at her door shortly before the crime. Mathew was discovered by her husband, who found her unconscious with multiple stab wounds. According to law enforcement, she had been strangled and subsequently stabbed, resulting in severe blood loss.

About 90 minutes post the incident involving Mathew, Baby reportedly contacted Hari and asked her to meet in the parking area of their shared apartment complex in Milpitas. Friends and family described their relationship as close, and witnesses indicated that Hari approached Baby’s SUV in a relaxed manner. It was subsequently alleged that Baby accelerated her vehicle and struck Hari before fleeing the scene.

Following the collision, Baby allegedly drove away from the apartment complex, hitting three parked vehicles en route. Law enforcement later discovered a blue Toyota SUV abandoned outside a retail pharmacy approximately 1.6 kilometres from the site of the incidents. Baby reportedly exhibited signs of confusion, struggled to respond to police inquiries, and was found with blood on her arms and legs.

Current Legal Proceedings and Reactions

Anila Baby has been booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail. Following her initial court appearance in Santa Clara County on September 12, she is scheduled to return on November 17 to potentially enter a plea. She faces two counts of first-degree murder, which could result in a sentence ranging from 50 years to life imprisonment if convicted, as reported by ABC7 News.

The circumstances surrounding these tragedies remain under investigation, with authorities indicating that the motive for the attacks is not yet clear. There have been speculative reports suggesting that Baby’s employment difficulties in the United States might be connected to the incidents; however, this has not been confirmed by police. In the aftermath of the killings, the Kerala government has mobilised efforts to repatriate the remains of both victims.

State officials have assured their families of support in accelerating legal processes necessary for the return of the bodies to India. Additionally, the Indian Embassy and the Malayali Association in California are providing assistance to the grieving families, who are currently waiting for the completion of post-mortem examinations and other legal formalities before the bodies can be transported back to Kerala for final rites.
