How to Make Modaks at Home for Ganesh Chaturthi: 3 Easy Recipes

The CSR Journal Magazine

Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations traditionally feature modaks, which are considered essential for observing the festival. These sweet dumplings are not only a treat for devotees but also bring families and communities together during the festivities. A variety of modaks, each differing in ingredients and flavours, play a significant part in the culinary aspect of the occasion.

Modaks: A Must-Have Sweet During Ganesh Chaturthi

These delightful treats are usually made from rice flour and filled with an array of ingredients ranging from sweet coconut and jaggery to nuts and dried fruits. As families prepare to honour Lord Ganesha, they often seek new ways to create these sweets at home, aiming to combine tradition with their personal tastes.

This year, three straightforward recipes are presented to help individuals make modaks at home. By choosing these recipes, one can experiment with both classic and modern flavours to enrich their celebrations.

Dry Fruit And Dates Modak: A Healthy Festive Treat

The first recipe focuses on a dry fruit and dates modak, which is both simple to prepare and nutritious. Ingredients needed include one cup of seedless dates, half a cup of figs, half a cup each of almonds, walnuts, and pistachios, along with a teaspoon of ghee and half a teaspoon of cardamom powder. To prepare, chop dates and figs coarsely before lightly roasting and crushing the nuts.

In a heated pan, combine the chopped fruits with ghee and cook until soft. Once done, mix in the crushed nuts and cardamom powder and shape the mixture into modaks using greased moulds. This recipe provides a healthy alternative for those looking for festive treats without refined sugars.

Ukadiche Modak: The Traditional Coconut-Jaggery Favourite

The second recipe is the traditional coconut-jaggery steamed modak, also referred to as Ukadiche Modak, which is a staple in Maharashtrian households. For this, one cup of rice flour, one cup of water, a teaspoon of ghee, one cup of freshly grated coconut, half a cup of jaggery, half a teaspoon of cardamom powder, and optionally, one tablespoon of poppy seeds are required.

To create the dough, heat ghee and water, adding a pinch of salt before incorporating the rice flour while stirring. After covering and cooking briefly, knead the warm mixture until smooth. For the filling, melt the jaggery, add coconut and optional poppy seeds, followed by cardamom powder. After mixing, shape the dough into cups and fill with the coconut-jaggery mixture before steaming the modaks for ten minutes. This recipe highlights traditional methods and flavours.

Chocolate Modak: A Modern Twist To The Classic Sweet

The last recipe presents a modern interpretation with chocolate modaks, perfect for those seeking a contemporary twist on the classic. This requires 200 grams of dark or milk chocolate, one cup of crushed Marie biscuits, a cup of roasted nuts (including cashews, almonds, and pistachios), and two tablespoons of condensed milk.

To prepare the mixture, melt the chocolate using a double boiler before adding the crushed biscuits, roasted nuts, and condensed milk. Once everything is well combined, grease modak moulds with ghee and fill them with the mixture. After firmly pressing it into shape, refrigerate for about one hour to allow it to set. This recipe appeals to those who prefer chocolate-based treats during the festive season.

These three modak recipes cater to various tastes, providing options for both traditional and modern preferences, making them suitable for a range of celebrations this Ganesh Chaturthi.
