On September 14, US President Donald Trump asserted that Ukraine and Russia have reached an agreement to stop targeting each other’s energy infrastructure. Trump made this announcement on Truth Social, indicating that both nations had allegedly committed to a reciprocal halt of attacks, which he attributed primarily to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine rather than recent crises in West Asia.

According to Trump, “Ukraine has agreed not to hit Russian energy targets. Russia has agreed to do likewise!” He connected rising diesel prices largely to the war, suggesting that the situation in Ukraine is the predominant factor impacting fuel costs globally. Trump’s remarks followed his earlier communication with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in which he urged Ukraine to cease targeting Russian oil facilities, citing the exacerbation of global supply shortages.

Zelenskyy’s Call for International Assurance

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded by stating that any pause in Ukraine’s military actions would hinge on international partners ensuring Russia’s compliance in safeguarding critical supply chains. He emphasised that Russian forces continue to target vital civilian infrastructure, including energy, logistics, food, and healthcare facilities.

Zelenskyy proposed that Ukraine’s allies obtain a commitment from Russia to halt attacks on essential infrastructure, asserting that the ongoing Russian strikes are daily threats to the nation’s food, energy, and logistical networks. “Ukraine is not convinced that Russia is willing to abide by any agreement,” he wrote on social media.

Additionally, Zelenskyy outlined specific conditions for halting Ukraine’s strikes. He noted that any cessation of offensive actions would only be possible if partners could guarantee that Russia would genuinely refrain from attacking Ukrainian facilities in the long term. “If our partners are ready to ensure that Russia genuinely refrains from striking our electricity systems and food supply routes, then we are ready to respond correspondingly,” he stated.

Zelenskyy Announces Advances in Defence Technology

In a separate update earlier the same day, President Zelenskyy disclosed that Ukraine is testing a new generation of drone interceptors aimed at countering Russia’s “Shahed” strike drones. He confirmed that funding for this initiative has been secured, highlighting the urgency of enhancing national defence capabilities.

While discussing defence strategies, Zelenskyy acknowledged ongoing operations in the eastern region of Ukraine. He expressed gratitude towards Ukrainian forces maintaining their positions along the front line, particularly praising the units that have faced intensive combat in the Donetsk region. Reports indicate that Ukrainian military operations have remained active in the face of continued Russian aggression.

In recent developments, a Russian drone reportedly struck near the Ukraine-Poland border, shortly after a diplomatic train carrying former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt departed from the area. Ukrainian railway officials confirmed that no injuries were reported and that the intended target may have been the diplomatic train itself.

The situation in Ukraine persists against a backdrop of increasing fuel prices, with the average diesel price in the United States reaching a historic high of $6 per gallon, affecting the voter sentiment ahead of upcoming mid-term elections. Both Ukraine and Russia continue to engage in significant military operations, leading to casualties and damage across both nations, as they grapple with the consequences of ongoing hostilities.
