Delhi Law Minister Kapil Mishra recently referred to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) as a substantial resolution of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). During a media interaction following the ‘Hindi Diwas and Vande Mataram Samman Samaroh’ event at the Delhi High Court on September 14, Mishra stated that the UCC could be enacted in the national capital if it is included among the states designated for its implementation.

Mishra highlighted that this announcement originated from the Home Minister and reiterated the BJP’s commitment to fulfilling resolutions made to the citizens of India. He asserted that the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has consistently met the assurances provided to the public.

He added that the Home Minister had established a timeline for the UCC’s implementation across all states governed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) by the year 2029. If Delhi is incorporated into this framework, Mishra expressed confidence that the UCC would indeed be enacted in the capital.

Significance of Hindi Language in Society

During the event commemorating Hindi Diwas, Mishra underscored the importance of the Hindi language, asserting that it evolves in parallel with power dynamics within society. He stated that language gradually cements its status among the populace.

Addressing the national song ‘Vande Mataram’, Mishra expressed his concern about the lengthy duration it has taken for the song to be performed in its entirety. He remarked on the irony of such a delay, questioning who opposes its full rendition. He referred to a video depicting a mother and son fleeing, connecting their actions to those who previously sought to diminish the significance of ‘Vande Mataram’ in India.

Mishra further acknowledged the influential role of the film industry in the spread of Hindi across the nation. He credited Bollywood for its substantial contribution to popularising the language, asserting that it has reached every region in India due to cinematic efforts.

Global Recognition of Indian Languages and Traditions

Mishra noted the growing international appreciation for Indian traditions and languages, citing a recent instance where the President of Indonesia sang a Hindi song at the BRICS Summit. He pointed out that practices like yoga and Ayurveda have found a global audience, claiming that Hindi will also achieve similar recognition worldwide.

Expressing concern over the diminishing use of Hindi among children, Mishra remarked that it is unfortunate that many young individuals are taking considerable time to acquire proficiency in the language. He observed that Hindi had nearly vanished from sectors such as the military and judiciary, yet it is now experiencing a resurgence in those areas.

Reflecting on the historical context, Mishra noted that in 1947, only about five per cent of the population spoke English, primarily interacting with the British colonial rulers. He emphasised that this transfer of power was not facilitated through democratic elections.
