The Sports Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, has called on Hockey India and the owners of Hockey India League (HIL) franchises to formulate a detailed strategy aimed at ensuring the financial sustainability of the league. This announcement followed a meeting with stakeholders where various concerns regarding the league’s operations were discussed.

According to ministry sources, the minister emphasised the urgency of creating a viable roadmap during this critical period. Mandaviya instructed Hockey India officials to prioritise the establishment of a five-member committee tasked with drafting this revival plan. The committee is to include two representatives from Hockey India, two from the franchise owners, and one senior official from the Sports Ministry, ensuring balanced input from all crucial stakeholders.

This meeting is a pivotal step in tackling the pressing issues faced by the HIL, which, despite its revival last year after a seven-year hiatus, has struggled to maintain adequate financial backing and franchise involvement. The minister’s proactive approach aims to address these challenges effectively.

Focus on Governance and Financial Structure

During the meeting, Mandaviya underscored the importance of developing an effective governance model, a robust financial framework, and a clear structural definition for the league. He made it clear that the committee’s findings and recommendations should be delivered within a specified timeframe to maintain momentum.

Representatives from several franchises attended the meeting, including Hyderabad Toofans, Vedanta Kalinga Lancers, JSW Soorma Hockey Club, Shachi Bengal Tigers, ALP Pipers, JK Cements, and the newly introduced Bengaluru franchise. Their participation reflects a collaborative effort between the ministry and franchise owners to ensure the league’s future viability.

The call for a structured plan follows ongoing concerns that have placed the long-term future of HIL in jeopardy. The minister’s directives are a vital endeavour to uplift the league and encourage continued participation from franchises, which is crucial for a successful operational model.

Management Changes and Ongoing Challenges

The meeting convened at a time when Hockey India is grappling with internal power struggles. Notably, the organisation’s President, Dilip Tirkey, has issued a show-cause notice to Cdr R K Srivastava, instructing him to refrain from executing his duties as Director General. This leadership issue adds a layer of complexity to the league’s revival efforts.

Despite the internal tensions, Srivastava managed to attend an official event in Mohali on the same day, alongside prominent officials, including the Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann. During the event, details regarding the forthcoming 2026 men’s Asian Champions Trophy came to light, indicating ongoing activities within Hockey India alongside the turmoil.

This juxtaposition of events highlights how Hockey India is attempting to navigate various challenges while striving to foster a sustainable environment for its flagship league. The synergy between the ministry and franchise representatives could potentially pave the way for a more stable and prosperous future for the HIL.
