Assam Chief Minister Oath Ceremony Scheduled for May 12

The CSR Journal Magazine

The swearing-in ceremony for Assam’s new Chief Minister is anticipated to take place on May 12, as confirmed by sources from the Assam State BJP. The event follows a decisive electoral victory that has positioned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for governance once again in the state.

BJP leader Dilip Saikia mentioned that central observers, including Union Minister JP Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, are expected to arrive in Guwahati on May 9 to facilitate the election of the party’s Legislative Party leader in Assam. This meeting will set the stage for the subsequent events leading up to the oath-taking.

A BJP Legislature Party meeting is scheduled for May 10 in Guwahati, which will be followed by a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meeting with the central observers present. These gatherings are crucial for solidifying the leadership structure ahead of the new government formation.

Resignation of Himanta Biswa Sarma

On May 6, Assam’s caretaker Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma submitted his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya. This development marks the transition towards establishing the new cabinet, following the party’s impressive electoral performance.

Sarma indicated that BJP National President Nitin Nabin designated JP Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini as central observers to guide the selection process for the next Chief Minister of Assam. Sarma emphasised that the legislative party would ultimately decide the new leader.

“We have invited the Prime Minister to attend the swearing-in ceremony,” Sarma stated, highlighting the significance of the occasion, particularly following the BJP’s strong electoral performance. He noted, “This time we achieved a hat-trick with a century.”

BJP’s Strong Electoral Performance

The BJP-led NDA secured a notable victory in Assam, winning 102 seats compared to the opposition’s tally of 75 seats. The BJP alone won 82 seats, while its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), obtained 10 seats each, solidifying the NDA’s position.

The opposition alliance, known as Mitrajoot, which includes the Indian National Congress (INC), managed to secure 19 seats. Furthermore, the Raijor Dal and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) each won two seats, while the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) failed to gain representation in the assembly.

Sarma confirmed that following the formal acceptance of his resignation, the Governor asked him to continue in a caretaker capacity until the new government is formed. He stated, “The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially announced the assembly election results, and they have submitted the results notification to the Governor. I have requested the dissolution of the current assembly.”

The caretaker government is expected to function diligently until the new administration is in place. Sarma expressed confidence in the expedited formation of the new government, ensuring smooth governance during this transitional phase.
