‘Matter of Life and Death’: Asaduddin Owaisi Urges Voters to Participate in SIR in Telangana

The CSR Journal Magazine

Asaduddin Owaisi, the President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has urged voters to regard the upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls as a crucial matter. At an Eid Milap event, he implored the community to fully engage with Booth Level Officers during the verification process starting on June 25. Owaisi termed this initiative as a “matter of life and death” for the electorate in Telangana.

The revision process is set to begin on June 25, with Booth Level Officers tasked with delivering enumerator forms directly to voters’ residences. Owaisi emphasised that it is vital for individuals to thoroughly check their details on these forms, ensuring accurate mapping of their information in the electoral lists.

Highlighting the importance of vigilance, Owaisi urged voters who might struggle with reading to seek assistance from Majlis workers designated as Booth Level Agents (BLAs) or from someone they trust. He expressed that understanding one’s registration details is essential for ensuring inclusion in the upcoming draft list.

Training and Support for Voters

Owaisi mentioned that AIMIM has appointed and trained members as BLAs to aid voters throughout the revision process. He stated that this dedicated team will continue providing support during the SIR. He encouraged attendees to carefully review the enumerator forms upon receipt, reiterating that accurate voter mapping is a prerequisite for being listed correctly.

Throughout his speech, Owaisi stressed that the responsibility for the electoral process lies collectively with the community. The AIMIM President stated that the party has been proactively working on the SIR for the last one and a half months, asserting their commitment to this civic responsibility. This assertion was made in the context of no other political entity having undertaken similar efforts in the country.

Owaisi also introduced a mobile application aimed at further facilitating the voter registration and verification process, illustrating the party’s commitment to leveraging technology in these initiatives. This blend of technology and grassroots efforts is intended to empower voters in Telangana.

Congress Party’s Response to SIR

In a related development, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy outlined the Congress party’s strategy to protect vulnerable groups, including Dalits, minorities, Adivasi, tribal communities, and migrant workers, from potential deletions of their names on the electoral list during the SIR. Reddy’s remarks took place during a Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the SIR could pose significant challenges for these communities. He emphasised the need for transparency in the SIR process. The Congress party has previously met with the State Chief Electoral Officer to advocate for the SIR’s execution with full transparency and has requested an extension of the timeline since there are no major elections scheduled in the near future.

On May 14, the Election Commission of India announced the commencement of Phase-III of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls across 16 states and three Union Territories. This initiative aims to cover over 36 crore electors, including Telangana, and has been strategically aligned with the ongoing census activities to optimise resource utilisation in the field.

The SIR process will feature clearly defined timelines, with the qualifying date set for October 1, 2026. The preparatory phase is scheduled to run from June 15 to June 24, 2026, followed by BLO visits from June 25 to July 24, 2026, concluding with the final rationalisation by July 24, 2026.
