YSRCP chief and former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, is set to visit the Devarapalli tobacco auction centre on August 5. The visit aims to provide an opportunity for Reddy to engage with local tobacco farmers who are experiencing significant financial distress due to plummeting prices. This information was confirmed by the YSRCP Central Office, highlighting the urgent need for attention to the farmers’ plight.

Concerns Over Falling Tobacco Prices

According to reports from the party, the farmers had previously approached Reddy to express their difficulties, urging him to visit the auction centre to understand their challenges firsthand. Currently, the prices of tobacco have dropped notably, with the average price hovering around Rs 186.90 per kilogram, despite prior assurances from political leaders such as Chandrababu that bids should not fall below Rs 200.

Issues are compounded by the Tobacco Board’s recent decision to halt updates regarding auction data over the last ten days, which has left farmers without critical information. In response, farmers have protested, yet they have reportedly received no significant response from the government regarding their concerns.

The YSRCP, as a responsible opposition party, intends to accurately highlight the issues faced by farmers using verified data. Concerns have also been raised about claims made by Union Minister Pemmasani regarding subsidies for farmers, which have been regarded as lacking a thorough understanding of the challenges faced by the agricultural sector.

Governmental Support and Financial Challenges

The central government has publicly announced a 4 per cent interest rate on agricultural loans for farmers. However, leaders like YS Rajasekhara Reddy and YS Jagan Mohan Reddy previously implemented a zero per cent interest scheme aimed at alleviating financial burdens on farmers. Presently, tobacco farmers are reportedly losing Rs 50 per kilogram, and the government’s efforts to address this issue have not yet yielded tangible relief.

Furthermore, the government has claimed it will purchase high-quality tobacco at Rs 250 per kilogram, medium-grade at Rs 190, and low-grade at Rs 110. However, farmers are sceptical about whether these prices will genuinely reflect in the market. Many believe that action is necessary from Markfed to stimulate competition, which would ideally lead to better pricing for farmers.

Reddy’s visits, whether concerning tobacco, mirchi, or mango, are seen as opportunities for raising awareness and prompting governmental action to address farmers’ concerns. His ongoing tour of West Godavari is expected to amplify the voices of tobacco farmers at a national level.

Environmental Factors and Water Resource Management

While the El Niño phenomenon has not significantly impacted the state’s agricultural areas, heavy rainfall has been recorded in catchment areas across northern states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Chhattisgarh, resulting in full rivers. However, challenges remain for regions like Rayalaseema, where water resources from the Srisailam project are reportedly being drawn by the upper riparian state of Telangana through multiple lift irrigation schemes.

This situation is further exacerbating the challenges faced by farmers in Rayalaseema, as water scarcity directly affects agricultural productivity. As such, the visit by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on August 5 aims not only to address the immediate concerns related to tobacco pricing but also to discuss broader agricultural issues facing the region.
