Following his actions in the 1965 war, he was promoted to brigadier and later commanded a mountain brigade in an area affected by insurgency.

General Sharma’s expertise extended to commanding an armoured brigade in the challenging terrains of the Rajasthan desert. By 1980, he had risen to the rank of major general, taking charge of a mountain division in the western sector, eventually advancing to lieutenant general and leading a corps in 1984.
