Apple Targets Late 2027 Launch For Smart Glasses

Apple is reportedly aiming for a late 2027 launch for its anticipated smart glasses, according to a recent report by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. This timeline represents a shift from earlier expectations, which had suggested a release by the end of 2026 and shipping commencing in early 2027. Development hurdles have contributed to this delay, pushing the launch back roughly one year.

Gurman notes that Apple is prioritising product readiness, opting not to release the glasses until they meet desired standards. The company is keen on ensuring that the glasses align with its vision for integrating Siri and Apple Intelligence, enabling a stronger foothold in the eyewear sector. This strategic approach may enhance competition against offerings from Meta and Google.

The anticipated pricing of the glasses is projected to be between $200 and $599, which converts to approximately Rs 17,000 to Rs 51,000, excluding taxes and import duties. This pricing strategy indicates Apple’s aim to cater to a broad consumer base.

Features and Functionality

Unlike more futuristic smart glasses concepts, the initial model from Apple is expected to centre on practical functionalities rather than extensive augmented reality capabilities. The first-generation device is designed to be user-friendly, featuring built-in cameras for photo and video capture, as well as microphones and speakers for calls and music streaming.

Users may also receive notifications and turn-by-turn walking directions via the glasses, allowing for convenient access to essential information. Apple reportedly envisions the glasses as a gateway to its broader intelligence features, laying the groundwork for future enhancements based on user feedback and technological advancements.

The design of the glasses will reportedly be a key component of Apple’s strategy. The company has been testing various frame styles, such as larger rectangular options reminiscent of Ray-Ban Wayfarers, slimmer models, and both large and small oval shapes. Different colour variations are also under consideration, including black, ocean blue, and light brown. Apple aims to employ custom-designed plastic frames and oval camera modules to distinguish its product in the market.

Market Positioning and Strategy

While the first iteration of the glasses may not feature in-lens augmented reality technology, this decision appears aimed at maintaining a balance between functionality and wearability. Gurman suggests that Apple intends to focus on creating a device that can be seamlessly integrated into daily life, steering clear of overly ambitious augmented reality projects that could complicate the product’s design and increase costs.

Furthermore, the absence of augmented reality features suggests reliance on cameras and audio integration with the iPhone. This strategy may lead to a lightweight and comfortable wearable that prioritises practicality over advanced visual capabilities.

Apple’s approach seemingly mirrors its methodology with the Apple Watch, targeting a mainstream audience and potentially offering multiple versions of the glasses. This effort aims to position the product not merely as a technology gadget but as a fashionable and lifestyle accessory that consumers regularly incorporate into their eyewear rotation.
