Apple iOS 27 To Be Unveiled Next Week, Older iPhones May Lose Support

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple is set to showcase iOS 27 at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026, scheduled for June 8. Reports indicate that several older iPhone models may no longer be eligible for software updates following the launch. This anticipated operating system will also feature updates for iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and other software.

According to a leak from Instant Digital on Weibo, it is likely that iOS 27 will only support the iPhone 12 series and more recent devices. Should this information be accurate, support for the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, and the second-generation iPhone SE will be discontinued. These devices, introduced between 2019 and 2020, have already benefited from multiple years of significant updates.

The newer models expected to remain compatible with iOS 27 include the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, iPhone 15, iPhone 16 series, the recently released iPhone 17 lineup, and the third-generation iPhone SE. Users whose devices fall outside this compatibility list may still receive security updates for iOS 26, albeit without access to the new features introduced in iOS 27.

Anticipated Features of iOS 27

iOS 27 aims to significantly enhance Apple’s artificial intelligence functions. Reports suggest that the upcoming update could provide a revamped Siri experience, which may offer more natural conversational abilities akin to those found in ChatGPT. This improvement would enable users to accomplish intricate tasks through simple voice commands.

In addition to Siri, Apple is reportedly working towards deeper AI integration across various system applications, including Camera, Photos, Wallet, and Shortcuts. The company is said to be experimenting with AI-driven photo editing capabilities, natural-language creation of shortcuts, and advanced writing assistance tools. Some of these potential features may be highlighted during the WWDC event.

The Camera application could see a substantial upgrade, with claims of a new Siri-driven mode and enhanced customisation options aimed at professional users. Additionally, the Photos app may acquire AI functionalities to expand image backgrounds, reframe pictures, and execute edits based on simple textual commands. Furthermore, the Wallet application is expected to introduce new tools for pass creation and AI-assisted bill-splitting capabilities.

Focus on Stability and Performance Improvements

Although numerous features are speculated, not all are likely to be launched simultaneously. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has likened iOS 27 to Mac OS X Snow Leopard, indicating that Apple may prioritise stability and performance enhancements over significant visual alterations. Current reports suggest that the tech giant is concentrating on making iOS more efficient and reliable while continuing to expand its AI capabilities.

The WWDC 2026 keynote will commence on June 8, unveiling a plethora of developments from Apple. Following the announcement, the initial developer beta version of iOS 27 is expected to be released shortly. A public beta may follow in July, culminating in the final global rollout anticipated in September, coinciding with the introduction of the next generation of iPhones.
