Apple Inc.’s Foldable ‘iPhone Ultra’ Tipped for September Launch with Premium Pricing

The CSR Journal Magazine

Reports suggest that Apple may name its highly anticipated foldable iPhone either the iPhone Fold or more likely, the iPhone Ultra. With the official launch expected in September, speculation regarding the device’s features and design is rife. A leak indicates that the iPhone Ultra will be available in two colour variants: silver-white and deep indigo.

This potential release could expand Apple’s smartphone line-up significantly this year, bringing the total to six models. These may include the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, iPhone Ultra, and iPhone Air. However, it is uncertain whether all six will debut simultaneously or follow Apple’s usual staggered launch schedule.

It appears that the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the iPhone Ultra are likely to be released in September, while the iPhone Air, iPhone 18, and iPhone 18e may be unveiled early next year.

Expected Pricing for the Indian Market

While the naming of the device is still up in the air, discussions are circulating regarding its potential price point. The iPhone Ultra is reportedly expected to cost around $2000, which will likely place its Indian pricing above Rs 2 lakh given the historical pricing model employed by Apple.

In the past, Apple used a rough conversion rate of $1 to Rs 100 for its products. Despite fluctuations in the dollar-rupee exchange rate, which has risen from about Rs 70, the company has maintained this pricing strategy for certain devices due to localised production in India.

However, the iPhone Ultra’s expected price point may necessitate a higher exchange rate for India, putting it above Rs 2.25 lakh due to its unique features and likely exclusive manufacturing in China.

Features and Design Insights

Before its official release, concept images and dummy units have surfaced online, hinting that the iPhone Ultra may adopt a book-style design that differs from existing foldable models. The device is expected to be wider than its counterparts, such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, but shorter, lending it a passport-like appearance.

This upcoming model is reportedly incorporating an innovative liquid metal hinge mechanism, which may enhance its durability and usability. The camera arrangement on the back is anticipated to resemble that of the iPhone Air, featuring two cameras set for enhanced photographic capabilities.

The iPhone Ultra is expected to come with a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer screen, both utilising advanced Samsung M16 OLED technology. The device’s thickness when closed is projected to be around 9.23mm, positioning it as one of the slimmest foldable options available.

Notably, the iPhone Ultra may forego some of Apple’s signature features, such as Face ID and the Dynamic Island. Instead, it might feature punch-hole camera cutouts on both displays paired with a side-mounted Touch ID for user authentication.

In terms of camera capabilities, the iPhone Ultra is expected to include a dual rear camera system featuring a 48MP main sensor and a 48MP ultrawide lens, with punch-hole setups for selfies, each housing an 18MP camera. The device will likely operate on Apple’s forthcoming A20 Pro chip and feature up to 12GB of RAM along with storage options reaching 1TB.

The battery for the iPhone Ultra may be its largest yet, speculated to be between 5,400mAh and 5,800mAh. Additionally, it might eliminate the traditional SIM card tray in favour of eSIM technology, reflecting a shift in design to accommodate the larger battery size. Users can also expect a revamped Siri as part of the iOS 27 experience.
