Apple Foldable iPad Faces Delay, Launch Timeline Now Stretched to 2028

The CSR Journal Magazine

The future of Apple’s anticipated foldable iPad appears uncertain, according to a recent report. Initially reported as a potential addition to the company’s product lineup, discussions regarding the 20-inch device have surfaced intermittently since 2023. However, projections for its launch have shifted considerably, moving from 2024 to estimates as late as 2028 and 2029. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that the device may ultimately remain a concept rather than a commercial product.

Despite being positioned as a priority under the guidance of incoming CEO John Ternus, Gurman asserts that the foldable iPad could be relegated to “a wacky experiment that doesn’t see the light of day.” This position raises questions about the viability and practicality of the device, given the technological challenges inherent in foldable screens.

Anticipated Features and Specifications of the Device

While concrete details remain speculative, it has been reported that the foldable iPad may boast a substantial OLED display nearing 20 inches when fully extended, potentially offering a resolution of 4K or above. When folded, the screen size reportedly decreases to approximately 15.3 inches, reflecting the dual-purpose nature of the design.

Apple is allegedly investigating the use of ultra-thin glass technology in collaboration with various display manufacturers. This innovation aims to address issues of creasing, a notable concern in the foldable technology sector. Additional reports indicate that Apple is experimenting with under-display Face ID, which could allow for a more seamless design without a visible notch. As of now, however, Gurman has mentioned that the panel might be too thin to successfully incorporate the Face ID sensor array, suggesting an alternative approach with a small-hole punch camera.

In terms of functionality, the foldable iPad may feature a lightweight yet sturdy carbon fibre kickstand, enhancing its usability for tasks related to media consumption and productivity. Furthermore, there are hints that the device could adopt a hybrid operating system, merging aspects of both iPadOS and macOS to leverage its larger display.

Potential Pricing and Market Position

Market expectations regarding the pricing of the foldable iPad suggest it could retail at around $2,000, which translates to approximately Rs 1,86,000. This figure positions the device within a premium segment, likely making it accessible mainly to high-end consumers.

According to renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is exploring the incorporation of electronic paper display (EPD) technology for future iterations of its foldable devices. The company may consider using colour EPD panels sourced from E Ink, which are anticipated to be significantly more energy-efficient compared to traditional display technologies.

As of now, Apple has not issued any official confirmation or denial regarding the development of the foldable iPad. The ongoing speculation continues to capture the attention of both consumers and industry experts alike, reflecting the broader trends in foldable technology and the evolving landscape of personal computing devices.
