“It’s not ‘Matgarna’, it’s ‘Mangarna’: Akhilesh Yadav Accuses BJP of Election Manipulation in West Bengal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Samajwadi Party chief, Akhilesh Yadav, on May 6, accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of election manipulation during a press conference held in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Yadav claimed that the electoral process has been distorted, stating, “it’s not a ‘matgarna’ (counting of votes), it’s ‘mangarna’.” His remarks highlighted suspicions surrounding the integrity of vote counting in West Bengal.

Yadav called for immediate action from the Supreme Court to enable the live telecast of vote counting in West Bengal, emphasising the need for transparency. He questioned why court proceedings could be broadcast live, yet the same was not applicable to vote counting. According to him, pre-established narratives and perceptions skew the actual counting process.

Claiming that the election outcomes are often determined beforehand, Yadav argued that the BJP had articulated a specific stance regarding the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, reflecting a dangerous trend in the democratic process. He stressed the importance of accountability while discussing electoral conditions in the state and nationally.

Criticism of BJP’s Election Tactics

Yadav detailed his concerns regarding the approaches employed by the BJP in managing electoral strategies, labelling the situation as forcing his party into a “Do or Die” proposition during the election period. He expressed gratitude towards the Samajwadi Party workers in Uttar Pradesh for their steadfastness amid alleged malpractices surrounding the elections.

According to Yadav, the BJP’s electoral tactics had involved various methods that undermined the democratic process. He reflected on previous elections, particularly referring to the 2022 state elections in Chhibramau, where he alleged that the deployment of central forces was leveraged to manipulate outcomes, thereby marginalising his party’s workers.

Yadav stated that these tactics contributed to the results in various legislative assemblies, compromising the integrity of the election process. He claimed that strategies employed by the ruling party were instrumental in altering election results in favour of the BJP.

Political Landscape and Consequences in West Bengal

Yadav’s comments coincide with significant political changes following the latest assembly elections in West Bengal, where the BJP made substantial gains, securing 207 seats while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) was reduced to 80 seats. This shift marks a historic moment for the BJP, which will form its first government in the state, ending the TMC’s 15-year administration.

Amid escalated political activities and turmoil resulting from the BJP’s victory, the outgoing Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, has resisted calls for her resignation, remaining firm despite the TMC’s considerable electoral loss. The ongoing political tensions in West Bengal reflect the broader implications of the recent elections and the evolving political dynamics of the state.

As the situation in West Bengal unfolds, the ramifications of the power shift continue to affect local governance and political engagements across the state. Yadav’s allegations contribute to an already fraught political environment, illustrating the contentious atmosphere surrounding recent elections and the enduring challenges to democratic practices in India.
