Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasised the importance of connecting youth with India’s border villages, highlighting these areas as integral to the vision of a developed India. During his address to participants of the Viksit Vibrant Village Programme, he suggested that enhanced engagement with these communities could foster stronger national ties and promote tourism.

Over three lakh young individuals expressed interest in the programme, with more than 400 selected to immerse themselves in the daily lives of border families for a week. Modi noted that ongoing improvement in infrastructure and connectivity is transforming these remote villages into thriving settlements, which can provide livelihoods through tourism and help mitigate out-migration.

The emphasis on border communities is rooted in a recognition that they often remain unexplored despite their unique cultures and scenic beauty. Consequently, the Prime Minister’s initiative aims to inspire a sense of adventure and discovery among the youth while contributing to the socio-economic development of these regions.

Highlighted Border Villages Worth Visiting

Several border villages stand out as exceptional travel destinations. Mana, located in Uttarakhand just 3 km from Badrinath, is often termed India’s “first village” due to its proximity to the India–China border. It features stunning stone architecture, the mythical Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa, and Bhim Pul, along with breathtaking views of the Saraswati River and the Vasudhara Falls trek.

Another picturesque location is Chitkul in Himachal Pradesh, situated in Kinnaur district near the India–Tibet border. This village is renowned for its charming wooden homes, turquoise Baspa River, and the panoramic views of snow-covered peaks, making it a perfect spot for leisurely strolls through apple orchards and alpine meadows.

In West Bengal, Totopara is a significant border village known for its indigenous Toto tribe, one of the smallest tribal communities in the country. This village presents a unique opportunity to delve into the tribe’s cultural heritage while also enjoying nearby wildlife experiences in Jaldapara National Park, famed for its one-horned rhinoceroses.

Exploring Cultural and Natural Attractions

Jaigaon, another vibrant town in West Bengal, serves as a gateway to Bhutan. This lively locale allows effortless border crossing without needing a visa, offering visitors a chance to browse active local markets and visit Bhutan Gate, while also exploring the serene nature trails and tea gardens in the Dooars region.

Zemithang, located in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district, has begun to capture attention for its scenic beauty and historical significance. Close to the India–China border, it is recognised as the entry point of the 14th Dalai Lama into India in 1959. Visitors can explore the Gorsam Chorten stupa and engage with the Monpa cultural heritage.

Dawki, situated in Meghalaya, draws tourists primarily for its stunning Umngot River, famous for its crystal-clear waters that create the illusion of floating boats. This border village also allows excursions to the India–Bangladesh viewpoint and offers thrilling activities such as kayaking in the region, enhancing the allure of the locale.

Kaho, nestled in Arunachal Pradesh’s Anjaw district, is celebrated as India’s easternmost village. This serene settlement is enveloped by majestic mountains and offers a chance to experience the Meyor community’s lifestyle while enjoying the tranquillity and natural splendour of the surroundings.

Many other border villages, including Kibithoo in Arunachal Pradesh, Turtuk in Ladakh, Suchetgarh in Jammu, and Tanot in Rajasthan, have emerged as popular travel destinations, inviting those seeking adventure at the country’s edges. Prospective visitors are reminded that travelling to these border villages requires careful planning, including obtaining necessary permits and adhering to local regulations, ensuring a safe and enriching experience.
