An Air India pilot was reportedly sent back from the United States after authorities allegedly discovered marijuana in his possession. The incident occurred this week when the pilot was travelling as a passenger on a flight from Delhi to San Francisco. According to sources, the pilot was set to operate a subsequent flight upon arrival but was found to be inadmissible under local laws.

Airline Statement

An Air India spokesperson confirmed the situation, stating, “One of our crew members travelling from Delhi to San Francisco on 14 April, for positioning to operate a subsequent flight, was found to be inadmissible as per local laws and has been sent back to India.” The airline has confirmed that the pilot was ‘deadheading’, a term used to describe crew members who are flown as passengers to their base station or another duty location.

Sources indicate that the allegations involve marijuana possession by the co-pilot. Following the incident, Air India initiated an internal investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the event. The airline emphasised its commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.

In light of the situation, Air India assured that it would implement strict disciplinary measures in accordance with its established policies. “Air India maintains zero tolerance towards any violation of the law and upholds the highest standards of safety, compliance, and professional conduct,” the spokesperson added in the statement.

Internal Investigation and Company Policies

The ongoing internal investigation aims to ascertain all relevant details regarding the pilot’s alleged actions. The airline has stated its determination to ensure that employee conduct aligns with legal and ethical standards, reflecting a commitment to maintaining the integrity of its operations.

Given the serious nature of the allegations, airline officials have indicated that any disciplinary actions taken will adhere strictly to company policies. The exact nature of the consequences for the pilot remains unspecified at this stage, pending the results of the investigation.

As Air India proceeds with the investigation, the case highlights the airline’s stringent stance on compliance with both international and domestic laws. It reinforces the necessity for all employees to maintain professional standards while representing the airline, both on and off duty.
