AI-171 Crash Fallout: Mental Trauma Forces Hundreds of Students to Leave

In the aftermath of the tragic Air India Flight AI-171 crash near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, which severely impacted a hostel housing medical student, BJ Medical College (BJMC) has announced major changes in its academic schedule.

All ongoing and upcoming internal MBBS examinations stand cancelled. The institution has also withdrawn summer vacations for its faculty and medical staff, urging them to contribute to the treatment and recovery of the injured.

Over 200 students, including MBBS residents, have left their hostels and returned to their hometowns, overwhelmed by the trauma and fear triggered by the crash. The emotional aftermath has left the campus deserted, as many struggle to cope with the shock.

Sources within the college reveal that nearly 40 students who witnessed the crash firsthand are still grappling with severe psychological trauma. Many remain in a state of deep shock, requiring emotional and mental health support. As per the official statement from the college, the exam would be rescheduled once the students get over the psychological impact.

A senior official from BJMC confirmed that, given the emotional distress among students and the logistical challenges following the collapse of the mess-cum-hostel building, all internal theory and practical examinations have been postponed indefinitely.

The aircraft’s wing tore through the building that served as both the hostel and dining facility for students. With the mess located on the first and second floors, the crash has left residents and interns without access to daily meals and essential amenities, shared an official.

In a parallel decision, the college has revoked summer leave for all medical faculty and doctors, directing them to remain on campus to support emergency healthcare efforts and student well-being.

The second half of the summer break was originally set to begin on June 13. However, all medical staff have now been instructed to resume duties from June 14 onwards in view of the ongoing crisis.

Meanwhile, Rishabh Rupani, son of Vijay Rupani, reached Gandhinagar from the United States on Saturday. His wife, Anjali Rupani, returned from London a day earlier on a specially arranged chartered flight.

Top BJP leaders, including Union Minister Parshottam Rupala and State Health Minister Rushikesh Patel, along with several party members and close relatives, have been visiting the Rupani residence in Gandhinagar to express their condolences and stand by the family during this difficult time.
