Adani Defence & Aerospace and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) have entered into a significant partnership aimed at advancing India’s Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) capabilities. This collaboration focuses on the AEW&C-MKII programme, designed for the Indian Air Force (IAF), and reflects the nation’s dedication to achieving self-reliance in defence manufacturing, known as Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Joint Development and Manufacturing Plan

Under the terms of the agreement, the two entities will work in tandem to develop, manufacture, and integrate airborne mission systems aboard six Airbus A321 aircraft, which will be specially modified for IAF operations. The initiative will not only focus on the aircraft’s production but also encompasses integrated logistics, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), as well as long-term technical support, spanning up to thirty years. The AEW&C-MKII is expected to be operational by the fiscal years 2032-33.

This collaboration merges DRDO’s extensive knowledge in defence research with Adani Defence’s manufacturing and systems integration expertise. Collectively, they aim to create one of India’s most sophisticated indigenous airborne surveillance platforms, thereby enhancing the country’s strategic capabilities.

Referred to as the ‘eyes in the skies’, AEW&C aircraft are integral to modern military operations. They provide long-range surveillance capabilities, early detection of threats, and real-time command and control assistance, facilitating quicker and more informed decision-making in the field. The addition of AEW&C-MKII is anticipated to greatly improve the IAF’s situational awareness and operational efficiency.

First Private Company Involved in Large-Scale Airborne Mission Development

This initiative positions Adani Defence & Aerospace as the first private Indian firm to take on the extensive responsibilities of developing, integrating, and providing lifecycle support for an airborne mission platform of such a significant scale and technical complexity. This landmark achievement underlines the evolving role of private entities in India’s defence sector.

Currently, only five nations — the United States, France, Israel, China, and Sweden — possess indigenous AEW&C capabilities. The successful development and deployment of AEW&C-MKII will elevate India among this elite group of countries, bolstering its position in the global defence arena.

The AEW&C-MKII will be equipped to integrate with the Indian Air Force’s Integrated Air Command & Control System (IACCS). This national network links various surveillance, air defence, and operational assets in real time, significantly enhancing national air defence efforts. The integration is expected to facilitate faster decision-making processes, seamless coordination in the battlespace, and improved operational responsiveness during critical missions.
