ABVP Student Alleges Assault at JNU, Police Complaint Filed

The CSR Journal Magazine

A student from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), has filed a complaint with the Vasant Kunj North police station in New Delhi, alleging he was assaulted by a group of individuals on campus. The incident reportedly took place in the early hours of Sunday while the student, Animesh Kumar, was returning from a party. Kumar, who resides at Kaveri Hostel, stated that he paused near the School of Languages Building-1 when he encountered a crowd attacking another student.

According to Kumar’s complaint, he tried to intervene to halt the aggression but was subsequently attacked by members of the group. He reported suffering injuries to his face and body. Following the incident, Kumar sought medical assistance, and he provided a copy of his Medico-Legal Case (MLC) as part of his complaint. In his statement, he described the moment, saying, “After some struggle, I somehow managed to escape from the place. I was in severe pain and my face was bleeding, therefore, I immediately went to the hospital for medical treatment.” The medical documentation confirmed visible injuries and cuts on his face.

Request for Legal Action

Kumar’s complaint includes the names of several alleged assailants and urges that a First Information Report (FIR) be registered promptly. It also calls for a thorough investigation into the matter. The complaint asserts the necessity of recording his medical evidence and statements, and he expressed willingness to cooperate fully with the authorities during the investigation.

University’s Reaction to the Violence

In response to the escalating tensions on campus, the JNU administration issued a warning regarding strict disciplinary measures and legal actions following a recent clash between left-wing groups and ABVP members. This altercation resulted in multiple academic buildings being locked down. The administration released a statement on X, outlining the consequences of the protests. It noted, “It has come to the notice of the JNU Administration that several Academic buildings inside the campus were reportedly locked by a group of protesting students.” These protests allegedly extended to the Central Library, where students were intimidated to participate.

Efforts to Maintain Campus Order

Highlighting the seriousness of these developments, the university administration condemned the behavior exhibited during the protests. In their statement, they remarked on the “unruly behaviour” and the “repeated destruction of public property.” They confirmed that strict actions would follow, guided by the university’s regulations and the applicable legal framework, to ensure a conducive academic setting on campus.
