Clash Between Student Factions at Jadavpur University’s Union Meeting

The CSR Journal Magazine

A physical altercation occurred between opposing student factions at Jadavpur University, resulting in injuries to two members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The incident transpired during a General Body Meeting conducted by the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students’ Union (FETSU) on Wednesday evening, at approximately 9 pm in Arbindo Bhawan.

The meeting was related to the constitution of the FETSU Union and involved students from varied political backgrounds. Reports suggest that Left-aligned students sought to unilaterally establish the union, prompting opposition from ABVP members including President Nikhil Das and colleague Diptiman Kar.

In response to their objections, a scuffle reportedly broke out between the two groups within the university’s premises. Both injured ABVP representatives, Nikhil Das and Diptiman Kar, were taken to KPC Hospital in Jadavpur for medical care following the confrontation.

Police Intervention and Complaints Filed

In the aftermath of the incidents, MLA Sarbari Mukherjee arrived at Jadavpur Police Station around midnight, accompanied by supporters, to file a complaint regarding the altercation. Aritra Sarkar, a third-year Computer Science and Engineering student from Murshidabad, reported the incident formally, confirming that it had occurred on campus.

Police were alerted to disturbances within the university and the Officer-in-Charge of the Jadavpur Police Station attempted to reach university officials but was unsuccessful. Eventually, a complaint was registered through Dial 100, prompting the Pro-Vice-Chancellor to contact local police for assistance.

A police team subsequently entered the campus, where they discovered that outsiders had to be removed from the area. The officers also found that some posters and festoons outside Arbindo Bhawan had been vandalised, with reports of them being torn and burned.

Current Situation and Potential Agitations

The police noted approximately 50 to 60 individuals still present at Arbindo Bhawan, where the General Body Meeting was ongoing. Officers instructed them to vacate the area, but they allegedly did not comply. Following police intervention, the gathering was dispersed.

Security forces and police personnel remain deployed outside Jadavpur University to prevent additional disturbances and maintain order. A complaint filed by Aritra Sarkar cites 11 individuals and invokes several sections of the Indian Penal Code, as well as provisions from the SC/ST Act.

Currently, the situation both in and around Jadavpur University has reportedly stabilised. However, police have received intelligence regarding possible political demonstrations planned by student organisations linked to various political entities at the 8B Bus Stand and nearby areas. Continued police presence is intended to prevent further escalation and ensure public safety on campus.
