Abhishek Banerjee Denies Concealing Evidence During Police Search

The CSR Journal Magazine

Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), addressed reporters following a police search at his residence in Kolkata on Saturday morning. He stated, “You can ask the investigating agencies about the search, whether I have hidden anything inside,” shifting the focus onto the investigators. This operation took place at his home in the Kalighat area and has sparked considerable political backlash in West Bengal.

The search began at approximately 3 am, led by teams from the Shalbani Police Station in Paschim Medinipur, who were supported by Kolkata Police and central forces. Reports indicate that the search was linked to an ongoing case involving Sumit Roy, a close aide to Banerjee. Police remained at the site for more than four hours, conducting a thorough examination of the property.

As news of the operation circulated, TMC leader Mamata Banerjee swiftly arrived at her nephew’s residence, remaining inside for an unspecified period. Her presence underscores the sensitive nature of the situation and its potential political ramifications for the party, already dealing with various challenges, including legal entanglements and internal dissent.

Responses to the Search

After the operation, Abhishek Banerjee challenged the necessity and extent of the search, dismissing allegations that his aide was being sheltered at his home. He questioned the intentions behind the police actions, a point that has raised eyebrows among political observers. However, officials from the investigating agencies did not provide immediate clarification regarding the specifics of the case connected to this operation.

The TMC released a statement on social media platform X condemning the police actions, asserting that the incident reflects a trend of political vendetta. This reaction indicates the party’s concerns over the motives behind the investigation and its impact on their position within the state’s political landscape.

This search came just two days after Banerjee endured nearly six hours of questioning by the West Bengal CID concerning the Assembly signature forgery case, a significant issue that has emerged as a crucial flashpoint for the TMC. Notably, the Calcutta High Court granted him interim protection from coercive action, while also mandating his cooperation with ongoing investigations.

Further Investigations Against TMC Leaders

In a separate but significant development, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) executed searches at multiple locations connected to senior TMC leader and MLA Madan Mitra. These searches are related to a money laundering probe tied to an alleged recruitment scam at the municipality level. Raids were conducted at Mitra’s residence in Dakshineswar, as well as other associated sites.

Investigators claim that Mitra is implicated in over 125 irregular appointments and is suspected of accepting bribes through intermediaries. This case adds further legal strain on the TMC, which is already under pressure from ongoing investigations and internal conflicts within the party.

Internally, the TMC is facing turmoil, with senior MP Kalyan Banerjee publicly criticising Abhishek Banerjee for his management of the party. Despite this, Abhishek acknowledged the criticisms, while Kalyan later softened his stance, referring to him as “like a son” and urging unity among party members. The combination of external investigations and internal disagreements places the TMC in a precarious position.
