Abhishek Banerjee Confirms He Has Not Requested Central Security Cover

The CSR Journal Magazine

Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, has publicly stated that he has not sought central security cover from the government. This declaration comes after he was attacked in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas. He took to the platform X to refute claims made by certain media outlets, which suggested he requested increased security following the incident.

Banerjee specifically mentioned the reports as unfounded, asserting that no security measures had been requested in the week following the attack. “This claim is entirely baseless and far from the truth. I have not sought any security cover in the seven days since the attack,” Banerjee wrote, addressing the media speculations.

Details of the Attack

During the incident in Sonarpur, Banerjee faced an aggressive crowd upon his arrival to visit the family of Sanju Karmakar, a member of the Trinamool Congress allegedly killed in post-poll violence. As he exited his vehicle, he was assaulted with stones and eggs thrown by a group of individuals. Some in the crowd attempted to physically confront him, escalating the situation.

Fortunately, Banerjee narrowly avoided serious injury, as a stone struck the helmet he was wearing, thus preventing direct impact to his head. Video evidence of the event highlights the moment of his near-miss, showcasing the chaotic environment surrounding the attack.

In the aftermath of the incident, Banerjee attributed blame to both the Central and State governments, stating they have a responsibility to ensure the safety of political figures. “The incident occurred under the watch of both the Central and State governments, and they must answer serious questions regarding the circumstances surrounding it,” he commented, emphasising the need for greater accountability.

Call for Enhanced Security Measures

Banerjee has expressed his concerns regarding the safety of citizens in West Bengal, urging both state and central authorities to address the rising threats. He highlighted an alarming increase in incidents of violence, including sexual assault, that has reportedly affected many ordinary residents. He emphasised that such issues warrant urgent attention from the respective security agencies.

“What is even more disturbing is that over the past month, West Bengal has witnessed numerous incidents of rape and other horrific crimes affecting ordinary citizens, many of which have received little or no attention. The safety and security of the people should be the foremost priority of those entrusted with governance,” Banerjee stated.

In conclusion, he called upon the authorities to concentrate on protecting the public rather than engaging in the dissemination of misinformation that can lead to politically charged narratives. His appeal highlighted the vital role that governance plays in ensuring a safe environment for all citizens in the state.
