The CSR Journal Magazine

Aaron Rai achieved a significant milestone in his career by winning the PGA Championship on May 17, 2026, marking the first victory for an English golfer in over a century. His success came with a three-shot lead over competitors Jon Rahm and Alex Smalley, ending a long wait that lasted 107 years since Jim Barnes last secured the title in 1919. Rai’s performance was highlighted by a remarkable final-round score of 65, finishing the tournament at nine under par.

The golfer’s ability to stay composed under pressure was evident as he made four birdies on the back nine, including a stunning 68-foot putt on the 17th hole that effectively clinched the victory. Rai’s achievement also marked a unique record in PGA Championship history, as he became the first player to improve his score in each round.

Aaron Rai’s Early Life and Career Path

Born on March 3, 1995, in Wolverhampton, Aaron Rai hails from a family with strong Indian roots. His father, Amrik Singh, is the son of Indian immigrants, while his mother, Dalvir Shukla, moved to England from Kenya during her youth. Rai grew up in an environment of hard work and discipline, with his father balancing community service and amateur tennis, while his mother worked various jobs, including as a mental health nurse.

<h4Interestingly, Rai’s entry into golf was somewhat accidental; at the age of four, after a mishap involving his brother’s hockey stick, his mother enrolled him in golf lessons. She purchased him a set of plastic clubs, which sparked an interest that would eventually lead him to pursue the sport professionally. He joined Patshull Park Golf Club at the age of five and trained at the Three Hammers Golf Complex.

<h4Rai’s journey in professional golf began when he turned pro at 17, a decision made after discussions with his family and mentors regarding the best way to develop his skills. He commenced his professional career on the PGA EuroPro Tour in 2014, steadily making his way up the ranks. His major championship debut occurred at the US Open in 2017, where he faced the challenges of competing at the highest level.
