AAP MP Ashok Mittal Joins BJP Following ED Raids

The CSR Journal Magazine

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Kumar Mittal has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday, marking a significant change in his political affiliation. This decision comes just nine days after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches related to him and his educational group.

The formal announcement of Mittal’s switch to the BJP took place during a press conference. The timing of his move is notable due to the recent ED actions, which were seen as a pivotal moment in the context of his political career.

ED Raids and Investigations

The Enforcement Directorate carried out multiple searches on April 15 under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). These operations targeted various premises related to the Lovely Professional University Group, which Mittal founded. According to sources, around ten locations in Gurgaon and Jalandhar were searched by the ED’s headquarters investigation unit based in Delhi.

Among the locations scrutinised were the Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar, as well as associated institutions, including Tetr College of Business and Masters’ Union School of Business located in Gurgaon. Additionally, Mittal’s residential property was included in the raids, indicating the extensive reach of the investigation concerning alleged FEMA violations.

Officials reported that the ED is investigating potential financial misconduct, specifically focusing on overseas fund flows and financial transactions involving Mittal’s educational enterprises. These inquiries reflect ongoing concerns about compliance with financial regulations within the education sector.

Implications for AAP and Punjab Politics

Mittal’s affiliation with the AAP began when he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2022, representing Punjab. His transition to the BJP is considered significant, particularly given the AAP’s robust political influence in the state of Punjab. This change could potentially affect the dynamics of power within the region.

AAP’s previous position and strategy in Punjab may be reconsidered in light of Mittal’s departure, as his influence and public profile could shift electoral dynamics. As the investigation by the ED continues, further developments may arise that could affect both Mittal’s and the BJP’s standing in the political arena.
