A Gurugram sessions court has sent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjeev Arora to two weeks of judicial custody following his recent arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering investigation. The decision was made on Monday, May 18, after the ED requested that Arora be placed under judicial remand. According to Arora’s lawyer, Arjun Diwan, the next court hearing is scheduled for June 1.

During the hearing, the ED mentioned the necessity of judicial custody, contending it was essential for the ongoing investigation. The court accepted the ED’s application, resulting in the remand. This is not the first time Arora has been in custody, as he had previously been remanded to ED custody for seven days before this latest development.

Details Surrounding the Arrest

Sanjeev Arora was arrested in Chandigarh on May 9 following extensive searches conducted at multiple locations, including his residence and four other properties connected to him. These searches reportedly took place as part of the probe into alleged fraudulent GST transactions exceeding Rs 100 crore. The investigation has raised serious concerns about the financial operations of Arora and his associated enterprises.

The Enforcement Directorate’s actions are connected to an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) filed on May 5. The ED has revealed insights gleaned from its investigation, emphasising that Hampton Sky Realty Limited (HSRL) is allegedly controlled by Arora and his family members. The report indicates that his son, Kavya Arora, serves as the Managing Director of the company.

According to the ED, HSRL engaged in substantial transactions during the Financial Year 2023-24, selling mobile phones worth Rs 157.12 crore to various local and international entities. The remediation has pointed out that Sanjeev Arora, as the Chairman and Managing Director of HSRL, was directly accountable for the company’s operations during the implicated transactions.

Investigations Under Ongoing Scrutiny

The ED’s investigation into Arora’s activities is part of a larger crackdown on financial irregularities involving GST fraud. The agency has been focusing on multiple entities allegedly engaged in laundering money and manipulating GST returns. The involvement of high-profile political figures has drawn considerable media attention and public interest.

No charges have been formally laid against Sanjeev Arora at this time; however, the unfolding events underscore the seriousness of the allegations. As the investigation proceeds, further details are likely to emerge regarding the specific nature of the activities in question and their implications for Arora and his associates.

Authorities have stated they will continue to investigate all entities involved thoroughly and have urged any individuals or businesses with pertinent information to come forward. The case highlights the increasing scrutiny surrounding financial activities within political circles and aims to uphold law and order in fiscal affairs.
