100-Year-Old Delhi Mosque Gets Eviction Notice, Water and Power Supply Cut

The CSR Journal Magazine

A historic mosque near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence in New Delhi has become the centre of a dispute after its management reportedly received an eviction notice directing it to vacate the premises within six days. The mosque’s electricity and water connections have also been disconnected, prompting concerns from Muslim organisations and political leaders over its future.

The Race Course Mosque, located near 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, is listed in the New Delhi Municipal Council’s (NDMC) heritage register. The dispute centres on the ownership and legal status of the land, with government authorities treating the property as unauthorised occupation and mosque representatives asserting that it is a protected Waqf property.

Eviction Notice Raises Concerns

According to reports published on October 19 and 20, 2026, the Land and Development Office (L&DO) issued a notice asking the mosque authorities to vacate the premises within six days.

The L&DO maintains that the structure stands on government-owned land. Mosque representatives, however, have challenged this position, citing its reported inclusion in the 1977 Delhi Gazette notification concerning Waqf properties and its listing as a heritage site.

The dispute has intensified amid a broader clearance drive in the Race Course Road area, where authorities have also taken action against nearby informal settlements.

Water and Electricity Connections Disconnected

The mosque’s imam, Maulana Mohammad Haroon, has alleged that electricity and water supplies were disconnected on October 7 during the demolition drive in the surrounding area.

The disconnection has reportedly created difficulties for the mosque’s management and worshippers. Mosque representatives have also raised concerns about restricted access to the premises, affecting people wishing to offer prayers.

The Delhi Waqf Board has sought urgent intervention from the authorities, requesting the restoration of essential services and protection for the mosque and its adjoining graveyard.

Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind Seeks Government Intervention

The controversy prompted a delegation from Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind to meet Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. The delegation submitted a memorandum seeking intervention to protect the mosque and ensure that worshippers can access the premises.

The organisation also called for the relevant authorities to examine the mosque’s legal and heritage status before any further action is taken.

Rijiju reportedly assured the delegation that he would make efforts to address the concerns raised.

Owaisi Questions Action Against the Mosque

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has also urged Rijiju to intervene, questioning why the Waqf authorities had not taken stronger steps to protect the property.

Owaisi cited the mosque’s reported Waqf status and heritage listing, arguing that these matters should be considered in determining its legal position. Other political and religious representatives have similarly called for the authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding the eviction notice.

Legal Status Remains Central to Dispute

The mosque’s heritage listing has added another dimension to the controversy. While the NDMC’s heritage register includes the Race Course mosque and its campus, the land ownership question remains contested.

The wider clearance operation has also affected nearby residents, with reports indicating that hundreds of families face displacement as part of the action against settlements on government land.

As calls for intervention grow, the immediate issues remain the eviction notice, the disconnection of essential services and the mosque’s legal status. The outcome will depend on the authorities’ response and any further legal proceedings concerning the property.
