Yogi Adityanath Highlights Governance Differences Between Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, Slams TMC in Kolkata Event

The CSR Journal Magazine

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath spoke at a public event in the Jorasanko Assembly area of Kolkata on April 22, where he contrasted the governance in Uttar Pradesh with that of West Bengal. His remarks came during a campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections. Adityanath claimed that West Bengal is experiencing lawlessness akin to the situation in Uttar Pradesh before 2017.

During his address, Adityanath asserted that law and order in Uttar Pradesh has significantly improved, mentioning, “Today, there is no unrest in UP… There’s a celebration everywhere.” He described the current situation in Uttar Pradesh as a new era that he referred to as ‘Ram Rajya’. He emphasised that the BJP government has instilled a sense of stability and order in the state.

Political Critique of Trinamool Congress

Adityanath made pointed criticisms of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), referencing comments made by Kolkata’s civic leadership. He remarked on the mayor’s statements regarding the use of the Urdu language, asserting that such actions could undermine Bengali identity. “We come here to say that no one can play with Bengali identity,” he said, underscoring the significance of cultural integrity.

Additionally, the Chief Minister challenged the cultural narrative of West Bengal, claiming that the state’s identity is more closely linked to local traditions than foreign concepts. He stated, “Bengal’s identity is not associated with the Kaaba, but Bengal’s identity has been associated with Maa Kalibari.” This remark illustrates his focus on regional cultural sentiments in his campaign messages.

Adityanath further alleged that under the current administration, there has been a lack of support for religious and cultural celebrations, particularly during Durga Puja. He accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of being “irritated by the name of Lord Ram,” implying that restrictions had been placed on these important events in the interest of maintaining public order.

Upcoming Assembly Elections in West Bengal

The West Bengal Assembly elections are set to take place in two phases, with polling covering a total of 294 seats. The first phase will involve 152 constituencies, while the second phase will address the remaining 142. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, as confirmed by the Election Commission of India.

The electoral contest in West Bengal is shaping up to be a significant one, with the Trinamool Congress aiming for a fourth consecutive term in office. Conversely, the BJP seeks to gain a foothold in the state following its strong performance in previous elections. Both parties are gearing up for what is anticipated to be a tightly contested battle.

As the elections approach, political rallies and public addresses are likely to increase in frequency as candidates seek to secure support from the electorate. Yogi Adityanath’s remarks reflect the ongoing tension between the BJP and the TMC, signalling a critical moment in West Bengal’s political landscape.
