Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin Call for International Fairness; Oppose Unilateralism, ‘Bullying’

The CSR Journal Magazine

Just four days after welcoming US President Donald Trump in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping greeted Russian President Vladimir Putin in a significant diplomatic move. Putin’s arrival on Tuesday was marked by discussions that led to the signing of over twenty agreements, focusing on trade, technology, and a shared vision for a multipolar world order. Both leaders acknowledged the strengthening cooperation between their nations, with Xi referring to their relationship as “unyielding,” emphasizing its importance shortly after advocating for a partnership between the US and China.

This back-to-back hosting of two global leaders has underscored China’s strategic importance in international politics. The proximity of the two visits raises questions about the motivations behind Xi’s quick meeting with Putin following Trump’s engagement. Observers note that this sequence of events could reflect China’s intent to project power by engaging both Washington and Moscow simultaneously amidst a complex geopolitical landscape.

During this visit, Putin’s 25th trip to China coincided with the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation. This timing highlights the deepening ties between Moscow and Beijing over the past twenty years, reinforcing the evolving dynamics of their partnership.

Significance of the Xi-Putin Discussions

The discussions between Xi and Putin were centred around expanding their comprehensive strategic partnership. While Trump’s agenda primarily focused on trade tensions and regional security matters, the tone of the Xi-Putin talks emphasised cooperation on energy, technology, and joint opposition to unilateral actions in global affairs. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated that the visit served as an opportunity to gauge China’s insights from their contacts with the US.

Furthermore, Putin expressed hopes that the US-China interactions would not escalate tensions or lead to economic sanctions, reflecting Russia’s close monitoring of the changing dynamics between China and the US during Trump’s trip. This meeting allowed China to assert its diplomatic efforts with both superpowers while deepening ties with Russia amidst increased western scrutiny.

During the meeting, both countries issued a joint statement condemning military interventions, implicitly addressing US actions in regions like Iran and Venezuela, which signifies their alignment on specific global issues.

Energy Cooperation and Strategic Negotiations

Energy cooperation remains a critical aspect of the China-Russia partnership. Since the onset of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, China has become a vital economic ally for Russia amidst western sanctions. The bilateral trade between the two nations has surged, with China reportedly purchasing over one-quarter of Russian exports, significantly in fossil fuels. Data has indicated that China accumulated $367 billion worth of Russian energy supplies since the conflict began.

This reliance on Russian oil highlights China’s energy security strategies, especially as geopolitical instability in the Middle East has disrupted global supplies and raised oil prices. Experts suggest that as China navigates potential future tensions over Taiwan, expanding energy agreements with Russia will be crucial for ensuring stable supplies.

A significant topic during the Xi-Putin discussions was the long-sought “Power of Siberia 2” gas pipeline project, which aims to enhance energy cooperation by linking Siberian gas fields directly to China. While Russia has pressured China for approval, Beijing has remained cautious to avoid over-dependence on a singular supplier. The successful finalisation of this project would mark a major achievement for both nations amidst their respective economic needs.
