West Bengal: Unrest Grips Falta as Villagers Demand Re-election Over Allegations of Voter Intimidation

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Hasimnagar area of Falta remained tense on Saturday as local residents took to the streets, alleging widespread voter suppression and threats of post-poll violence. Protesters have called for a fresh election, claiming they were systematically prevented from exercising their franchise during Wednesday’s polling.

Allegations of Intimidation

The outcry is primarily directed at Ishraful Chakdar, the Panchayat Pradhan of Bangnagar 2, who is reportedly a close associate of Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Jahangir Khan.

Villagers allege that Chakdar and his supporters engaged in a campaign of fear, including:

Voter Blockades: Residents claim they were physically barred from reaching polling booths.

Property Damage: Allegations of house vandalism targeting those perceived to be opposition supporters.

Post-Poll Threats: Protesters shared chilling accounts of being told they would be “dealt with” once the official results are declared.

“I couldn’t even cast my vote,” one resident stated during a protest march. “Many in our neighborhood were threatened in their own homes. Ishraful warned us that if we stepped out, we would be killed. We are marching to demand his immediate arrest.”

Police Action Sparks Further Outrage

The situation escalated when local police reportedly used baton charges (lahti-charge)to disperse the gathering crowds. This move has only intensified the villagers’ anger, with many accusing the authorities of failing to provide protection while being heavy-handed with victims.

“We managed to vote amidst extreme duress and torture,” a female protester told reporters. “Now we want security. Why should we be threatened in our own homes? Our only demand is a re-election.”

Security Measures and Political Climate

As the protests intensified, heavy reinforcements of Central Forces and armored vehicles arrived at the scene to restore order. The atmosphere remained charged, with “Jai Shri Ram” slogans echoing through the area—a sign of the deep political polarization underlying the unrest.

Local residents further alleged that “proxy voting” (chappa vote) is a recurring issue in the region. They claimed TMC workers routinely intimidate voters, forcing them to support the ruling party under the threat of dire consequences.
While the Election Commission has yet to issue an official statement regarding the demand for a re-poll in Falta, the heavy presence of security forces suggests the situation remains volatile.
