West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh has stated that “big political names” might be connected to the recent collapse of an under-construction godown shed in Kolkata’s Taratala area. He made these comments while criticising the previous governments, specifically the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Trinamool Congress, for their alleged involvement in corrupt practices. This unfortunate incident occurred on June 24, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals and injuring several others.

In the wake of the tragedy, Ghosh pointed out that three individuals, including a building supervisor and two labour suppliers, have already been arrested in connection with the case. He emphasised the need for a thorough inquiry into the alleged corruption behind the incident, asserting that the state government will ensure that those responsible are held accountable. Ghosh expressed his concern over the involvement of outside labourers, highlighting the risk of innocent lives being lost in this manner.

Investigation and Government Response

The West Bengal government has initiated an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the mishap. Minister Dilip Ghosh assured reporters that the investigation will uncover the truth and that no one will evade responsibility. He stated, “Our government has started this work; no one will be spared.” Ghosh’s remarks suggest that the inquiry may yield important revelations concerning the alleged connections between political figures and the incident.

Ghosh also recalled similar incidents during previous governments, remarking on the frequent occurrences of market fires and infrastructure failures that had resulted in significant loss of life and property. He mentioned the Burrabazar flyover collapse as an example of the negligence that has characterised past governance, tying it to ongoing issues of safety and construction standards in the state.

In a related statement, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari confirmed that the death toll has reached five and stated that two of the twenty injured are currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit, while the remaining eighteen are reported to be out of danger. This information was shared during a visit to the injured at SSKM Hospital following the incident.

The collapse occurred at approximately 12:07 pm on June 24, triggering immediate rescue operations. The Indian Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed to assist in the rescue efforts, working diligently to ensure that those trapped are safely retrieved.
