Vinesh Phogat Overcomes Last-Minute Challenges for Asian Games Trials

The CSR Journal Magazine

Vinesh Phogat has managed to clear significant obstacles ahead of the Asian Games selection trials. Despite being cleared for participation by the Supreme Court, the wrestler encountered various challenges in the run-up to the trials. After a series of legal disputes involving the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), the situation was finally resolved, allowing her to compete in the 53kg category.

The WFI had previously contested a Delhi High Court ruling that mandated Phogat’s inclusion in the trials. Fresh complications arose when a WFI communiqué suggested that she would need to compete in the 50kg category, a decision that reportedly contradicted previous discussions regarding her participation.

Sources close to Phogat indicated that the focus had always been on the 53kg division, with the 50kg classification never having been formally discussed. This added to the uncertainty surrounding her eligibility as the trials approached.

Weigh-In Delays and Official Procedures

An early start was not without its own challenges for Phogat. She arrived at the Indira Gandhi Stadium at 6:30 am but spent time waiting for her weigh-in, which took place around 8:20 am. Phogat, a three-time Olympian, had originally intended to make her return in the 57kg category during the Senior Open Ranking Tournament in Gonda earlier this month, but her participation was blocked by the WFI.

To address the weigh-in process, the Wrestling Federation of India issued an official statement confirming that the weigh-ins for all categories, including the 53kg division, were conducted as scheduled. However, the statement did not clarify the previous confusion concerning the weight category for Phogat.

“Eligible wrestlers, including Ms. Vinesh Phogat, reported for the weigh-in and completed the requisite formalities,” the WFI confirmed, further stating that all eligible participants had been cleared for the selection trials, which were set to commence shortly thereafter.

Observers Appointed for the Selection Trials

In the backdrop of these developments, the Delhi High Court instructed the Sports Ministry to appoint observers for the upcoming trials, particularly to ensure fairness amid ongoing tensions between Phogat and the WFI. The observers will include former footballer Aditi Chauhan and Olympic gold medallist hockey captain M M Somaiya.

Aditi Chauhan, a noted former goalkeeper, gained recognition for her professional football career in the UK with West Ham United. Currently serving as a Programme Officer for the Indian Olympic Association’s Athlete Commission, she has represented India in 57 international matches.

Meanwhile, M M Somaiya, who has a storied history in Indian sports, was part of the hockey team that secured gold at the 1980 Olympics and later captained the side during the 1988 Seoul Games. Both observers bring considerable experience to the table as the trials get underway.

With legal concerns behind her, Phogat aims to focus on her performance as she prepares to compete in the trials. A strong display could reinforce her position as a leading contender in women’s wrestling at the Asian Games.
