Vijay References Lincoln in Tamil Nadu Assembly, Calls for Respect for Minor Parties

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a notable address in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Chief Minister Vijay invoked the words of former US President Abraham Lincoln, underlining the importance of safeguarding democratic values. This remark came during discussions concerning the election of a new Speaker, where he reiterated the significance of equal representation and legislative integrity.

Vijay quoted Lincoln’s well-known definition of democracy as a government “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” He articulated that the current democratic framework embodies high expectations from the public. “It is vital that this Assembly acknowledges those expectations and actively works to implement strategies and legislation to address them,” Vijay stated, asserting that the government’s operations should be oriented towards maximising public benefits.

Commitment to Inclusivity in the Assembly

Continuing his vision for the Assembly, Vijay stressed the principle of equality among members. He highlighted that every voice holds significance, regardless of party size, stating, “Even if a party has only a single representative, their perspectives should receive the same respect as those from larger parties.” This statement serves to reinforce the role of minority parties in legislative discussions.

He further added, “No one should be judged based on their seat in this Assembly. Quality ideas should prevail regardless of their source, ensuring that the Assembly operates as the foundation of democracy.” This message was a clear call for open dialogue and equals consideration among all political representatives.

The setting for these remarks was significant, as it preceded the election of TVK MLA JCD Prabhakar as Speaker and party legislator M Ravi Shankar as Deputy Speaker, both of whom were elected unopposed. This scenario underscores the implications of Vijay’s call for respect towards smaller parties.

Historical Context of Legislative Roles

During his address, Vijay also provided historical context by recalling the British parliamentary system. He described the historical challenges faced by Speakers in delivering Parliament’s decisions, noting the serious risks they had to navigate. “The Speaker had the responsibility of informing the King of Parliament’s refusals, and those times were fraught with peril as speakers often faced dire consequences,” he remarked, referring to the severe penalties that could arise from opposing royal decrees.

This historical reference served to illustrate the importance of the Speaker’s role and the integrity required to uphold democratic principles. By invoking this context, Vijay aims to remind members of their own responsibilities towards maintaining legislative dignity.

The Chief Minister’s address coincides with his leadership of Tamil Nadu’s first coalition government. As he prepares to secure his majority in the Assembly on Wednesday, his emphasis on democratic values and inclusivity is likely intended to reinforce unity among diverse political entities within the legislature.
