Vijay’s Jana Nayagan reaches Supreme Court, BJP accused of delaying release

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tamil superstar Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan has been in controversy for a while now over the certification of the film, adding to the row, the matter has now reached the Supreme Court. Producer of the film KVN Productions has filed an appeal challenging the order by the Madras High Court, which has put the release date uncertain.

In the last verdict by the single-judge bench of Madras High Court, Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) was ordered for immediate release of the film certification, but a few hours later, a division bench stayed the ruling, making the Pongal release uncertain.  Venkat K Narayana, Producer apologized to everyone who has been eagerly waiting for the film and said it is very emotional for him. Vijay deserves the farewell and we are hopeful the film will be released at the earliest. He even noted that he has complete faith in the judiciary.

The Rs 500 crore budget film will be actor Vijay’s last movie as he is entering into politics through his newly-formed part Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

What is stopping the release of Jana Nayagan?

As per the details shared by Venkat K Narayana, the producer of the film on his X handle, they received an email stating that the committee of the CBFC will be giving U/A 16 censor certificate but with a few cuts. After making the suggested cuts, when the team submitted the movie to CBFC examining committee members, they alleged that Jana Nayagan has scenes that can hurt religious sentiments. CBFC referred the matter to a revising committee, but with no confirmation for long. Thereafter the producer approached the Madras High Court for relief. On January 6, 7, the matter was heard by Justice PT Asha and she was of the opinion that the chairperson of CBFC should have sent the movie for review by the revising committee, as the filmmakers had agreed to suggest a cut and ordered immediate release of certification. But, a few hours later the Division Bench Court led by Chief Justice MM Shrivastava stayed the order of Madras High Court on ground that CBFC wasn’t given enough time to respond to the plea.

Some political insiders have suggested that the BJP-led central government is behind the delay of the film. DMK lader TKS Elangovan has blamed BJP for delay in censor certification. In a conversation with a news agency, Elangovan said, “The BJP is delaying the release of the movie Jana Nayagan with censorship objections. Normally, the censor process is completed within 2-3 days, but they are putting pressure.”
