India’s Passenger Vehicle Market Sees Green Shift as EV, CNG, and Hybrids Reach 42%

The CSR Journal Magazine

India is witnessing a significant transformation in its passenger vehicle market, with a marked increase in the adoption of cleaner fuels. According to a report by Equirus Securities, the combined share of compressed natural gas (CNG), hybrid, and electric vehicles rose to 42 per cent of passenger vehicle sales in August 2026, surpassing petrol for the first time. This transition highlights a growing preference among consumers for sustainable alternatives.

The report reveals that passenger vehicle retail sales leapt by 16 per cent year-on-year in August. This growth was partly driven by improved affordability resulting from recent Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate reductions. Petrol’s market share diminished significantly, falling to a record low of 41 per cent, a reduction from 46 per cent the previous year. In contrast, CNG’s share escalated to a new high of 25 per cent, reflecting a growing trend in cleaner fuel adoption.

Furthermore, the shift in the fuel mix for passenger vehicles indicates an ongoing departure from petrol. The decline in petrol’s share from the previous year’s figures underscores a notable trend towards environmentally-friendly options among Indian consumers.

Growth in Electric Vehicle Sales

The surge in electric vehicle sales is noteworthy, with a year-on-year increase of 52 per cent, amounting to approximately 30,700 units sold in August. This growth advanced the penetration of electric vehicles in the market to 7.7 per cent, a rise from 5.9 per cent in August 2025, despite a slight decrease from 8.1 per cent in July 2026. The acceleration in sales indicates a robust interest in electric vehicles, although some buyer hesitation around the transition to E20 fuel may have influenced the shift towards CNG and hybrids.

Tata Motors has emerged as a leader in the electric vehicle segment, achieving a share of roughly 43 per cent in August 2026. This figure marks the highest level since December 2025, reflecting a recovery supported by a diverse electric vehicle portfolio and the introduction of the Tiago EV. In contrast, competitors faced challenges; for instance, JSW MG Motor’s share declined to about 15 per cent from 28 per cent a year earlier, exacerbated by increasing market competition.

Similarly, Mahindra & Mahindra’s electric vehicle share decreased to approximately 21 per cent in August, down from 23 per cent in July. Additionally, Maruti Suzuki made its entry into the electric vehicle market, capturing around 5 per cent of the segment during this time. This competitive dynamic illustrates the evolving landscape of electric vehicle manufacturers in India.

Regional Insights and Market Dynamics

Region-specific data reveals that Delhi recorded the highest penetration of electric vehicles in the country in August 2026, at approximately 19 per cent. However, this figure was somewhat inflated by fleet registrations, particularly from a VinFast-supplied taxi fleet. Adjusting for this factor, the estimated underlying penetration in the city stands between 12-14 per cent. This is still considerably higher than the national average of 7.7 per cent.

The shift towards cleaner fuel options is indicative of broader trends within the Indian automobile industry as consumers become increasingly conscious of environmental impacts. As the market evolves, the increasing availability and affordability of alternatives to petrol may continue to reshape the passenger vehicle landscape.

Overall, the data points to a significant pivot towards cleaner fuel adoption, suggesting a future where environmentally-friendly vehicles might become dominant in the Indian passenger vehicle market, aligning with global sustainability efforts.
