South African Envoy Praises India’s Digital IT Infrastructure Ahead of BRICS Summit

South Africa’s Consul General in Mumbai, Gideon Labane, expressed that India and South Africa share numerous commonalities, which he believes will bolster their bilateral ties. In a conversation during the Global Impact Forum: Edition II-Civilisation Legacy held in Mumbai, Labane highlighted the significance of the large Indian diaspora in South Africa as a connection between the two nations.

Labane noted that the Indian-origin community in South Africa, which is estimated to be around 2 million people, plays an essential role in enhancing bilateral relations. He pointed out that close sporting ties, particularly in cricket, further contribute to the collaboration between the two countries. “India’s advancements in cricket align well with our performance in the sport, promoting frequent tours between our nations,” he mentioned.

Anticipating the BRICS Summit

Gideon Labane welcomed India’s presidency of BRICS and expressed excitement about the upcoming leaders’ summit planned to take place in Delhi next week. He remarked that the theme of this year’s presidency appears promising and is optimistically looking forward to significant announcements during the summit.

According to Labane, the BRICS grouping is exemplary, and he emphasised the potential for enhanced cooperation. He hopes that member countries will be able to share and accomplish numerous objectives under India’s leadership. The forthcoming summit presents an opportunity for participants to engage on various critical issues through collaborative discussions.

Highlighting India’s contributions to the digital realm, Labane pointed out the considerable benefits that other BRICS member nations could gain from India’s digital IT infrastructure. He specifically mentioned the success of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) technology, suggesting that other countries in the group may leverage similar advancements to enhance their financial systems.

Insights from the Global Impact Forum

The Global Impact Forum Edition II, taking place from September 5 to 6 at the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai, features the theme “Civilisational Legacy.” Organised by AP Globale, the forum aims to foster discussions among stakeholders from business, government, policy, and academia on critical topics such as investment and international cooperation.

Prior to the forum’s commencement, Janhavi Pawar, Director of AP Globale, articulated the event’s alignment with the BRICS theme, focusing on the importance of soft power and investment in India. She mentioned that retaining trade and talent amid geopolitical instability is directly linked to cultural understanding.

Pawar underscored the necessity for companies to be mindful of local cultures, particularly when entering new markets. The forum aims to enhance mutual understanding and build trust among diverse delegations, thereby facilitating stronger bilateral relations among participating nations during the summit.

Looking Ahead to BRICS Chairmanship

As India prepares to host the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12-13 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, the nation’s leadership is framed by the theme: ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.’ This theme reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a community-oriented approach grounded in the philosophy of “Humanity First.”

The summit is expected to bring together leaders from BRICS Member and Partner Countries, along with Outreach Invitees. India’s leadership role in this context aims to foster cooperation and mutual understanding among the nations, paving the way for future collaboration across various sectors.

As the summit draws closer, anticipation continues to build regarding the outcomes of discussions and collaborations that the member countries may achieve under India’s strategic presidency.
