Anupriya Nagar: The 21-Year-Old Powering ‘Hanuman Ansh’

The CSR Journal Magazine

Anupriya Nagar, a 21-year-old university student from the UK, is making waves in the Indian film industry as the producer of ‘Hanuman Ansh’, a film inspired by Neem Karoli Baba’s life. Originally studying economics at the University of Bath, her academic pursuits led her unexpectedly into the realm of cinema. Through a university project, she has managed to transition from student to producer, showcasing the multifaceted nature of her talents.

Initial Response at the Box Office

Upon its release on August 7, ‘Hanuman Ansh’ garnered initial box office returns of approximately Rs 10 lakh in India. The film’s earnings did not start off strong, with the first week collecting just Rs 1.08 crore followed by Rs 40 lakh in the second week. However, this trajectory changed dramatically in the subsequent weeks, reflecting a growing interest.

By the 27th day after its release, the film’s net collection had soared to an impressive Rs 61.38 crore, with gross collections reaching Rs 72.32 crore as of September 2. It is important to note that while these figures highlight significant financial success, they do not necessarily translate directly into profit for the producers due to the division of revenues among various stakeholders involved in the film distribution.

The production costs of ‘Hanuman Ansh’ were reportedly around Rs 2 crore, although some estimates suggest that the cost may have been closer to Rs 1.8 crore. This budget, when compared to the film’s earnings, illustrates a remarkable return on investment, particularly for a first-time producer.

The Journey from Economics to Filmmaking

Anupriya Nagar’s entry into filmmaking began as part of an economics assignment focusing on investment and banking. During her research, she explored the business acumen of Steve Jobs, leading her to his notable association with Neem Karoli Baba and his visits to India. This academic exploration sparked a deeper interest in Baba’s life and teachings, prompting Nagar to engage her team in extensive research.

Throughout the project, which spanned approximately one year, Nagar’s team visited locations tied to Neem Karoli Baba and communicated with individuals who had known him personally. Significant sites such as Chitrakoot and Vrindavan contributed to a comprehensive understanding of the figure inspiring their film.

Nagar aimed to present this story to a younger and more global audience, marking her unconventional pathway to producing a feature film. The absence of traditional film school training or the usual route through Bollywood further distinguishes her cinematic journey. What began as an academic endeavour transformed into a full-fledged film project, revealing the potential for innovative storytelling in unexpected settings.

Profile of Anupriya Nagar

In addition to her role as a producer, Anupriya Nagar identifies herself on social media as an economist and artist. Her artistic inclinations emerged early; she began showcasing her artwork at the age of 12 and later expanded her involvement to include various university art, dance, and business societies. Her versatility as a student has contributed to her capabilities as a producer.

‘Hanuman Ansh’ was realised under Swambhu Media Network, featuring several notable contributors alongside Nagar, including Ragini S, Namrata G Singh, and director Vishal Chaturvedi. The impressive performance of her debut film, particularly given her young age, showcases the remarkable achievement of this emerging filmmaker.

Her journey began not on a film set but rather through the lens of an academic inquiry into a prominent figure in Indian spirituality. As Anupriya Nagar continues to navigate her path in the film industry, her story becomes an exemplar of how diverse experiences can inspire creativity and success in unexpected forms.
