The Supreme Court of India has announced the launch of a monthly lecture series focused on law, justice, and legal education. Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, provided details about this initiative during a Teachers’ Day address on September 5. The aim is to encourage discussions on contemporary legal and social issues, fostering a space for intellectual exchange among various stakeholders in the legal field.

Structure and Format of the Series

The lecture series is designed around the theme “One Important Idea. Every Month.” It will feature participants from the Bench and Bar, as well as academic experts and emerging legal professionals. Each session is set to include a keynote address by a distinguished legal figure or scholar, followed by a moderated dialogue involving young advocates, law students, and researchers, aiming to create a bridge between different generations within the legal community.

Beyond traditional lectures, the format encourages an interactive environment where established legal institutions can directly engage with younger members of the profession. The Supreme Court intends that the discussions will be documented and made available, creating a public archive of contemporary legal thought through recorded sessions, edited transcripts, and concise “Ideas Papers.”

Live streaming of the lectures is part of the plan to ensure broader accessibility to national audiences. Furthermore, summaries of discussions will be provided in Indian languages to widen participation from various segments of the legal and academic communities throughout the country.

Recognition of Legal Education Contributions

In conjunction with the lecture series, the Supreme Court has proposed an annual honour called the “Supreme Court Nyaya Shiksha Samman.” This non-monetary award will aim to acknowledge significant contributions to legal education. It is scheduled to be presented around Teachers’ Day each year to one or two exceptional educators in the field. The inaugural award ceremony will take place after the first lecture.

The first edition of the lecture series is set to occur in September 2026, with subsequent sessions planned for each following month. This initiative reflects the Supreme Court’s ongoing commitment to engaging with broader discussions regarding legal and teacher education standards.

Recently, the Supreme Court reaffirmed the regulatory authority of the National Council for Teacher Education, requiring Teacher Education Institutions to submit annual Performance Appraisal Reports. This emphasis on accountability aligns with the organisation’s goals of promoting quality in education and professional practices within the legal framework.

Promoting Legal Thought and Engagement

The Supreme Court’s new initiative seeks to instil a tradition of deeper legal thought and meaningful dialogue within the community. By engaging various participants in discussions, the series is expected to influence the future of law and justice in India. This platform will foster a culture of inquiry and sharing of ideas, vital for the legal profession’s evolution.

The Supreme Court aims to establish a sustained intellectual discourse through these lectures, encouraging ongoing conversations about critical issues impacting the legal system and society at large.
