Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel, is set to embark on a three-day official trip to India. This visit will officially take place from September 7 to September 9, with significant engagements planned in New Delhi and Chennai. Bettel will meet with India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, in the national capital on September 7.

Upon arrival in New Delhi on Monday, Bettel is scheduled to hold discussions with Jaishankar at Hyderabad House. The agenda will focus on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring areas for further cooperation, particularly in sectors such as FinTech, space exploration, and Artificial Intelligence.

On the following day, September 8, Bettel will travel to Chennai, where his itinerary includes a visit to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. He is also expected to inaugurate a new SES campus during this segment of his visit. Bettel will conclude his trip by departing from India in the early hours of September 9.

Historical Context of India-Luxembourg Relations

The visit aligns closely with previous dialogues between Jaishankar and Bettel, which took place in Luxembourg earlier this year. During their earlier meetings, both leaders exchanged views on existing bilateral relations and opportunities for collaboration. India and Luxembourg established diplomatic relations in 1948, and their partnership has evolved into a robust alliance characterised by mutual understanding.

Jaishankar has previously mentioned that the two nations share a long-standing relationship which has spanned 78 years. He described Luxembourg as a key partner for India, particularly regarding enhancing ties with the European Union. His commitment to fostering this partnership was evident in his remarks acknowledging Bettel’s influence in strengthening India-Luxembourg relations.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Luxembourg’s Embassy was opened in New Delhi in February 2002. The country also maintains honorary consulates in cities including Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru, providing further channels for diplomatic engagement and cooperation.

Areas for Future Collaboration

During their discussions, Jaishankar highlighted the strong trade relationship that exists between India and Luxembourg. He expressed optimism regarding the potential for deepening collaboration, especially in emerging sectors that are becoming increasingly relevant in today’s global landscape. The minister noted that there are numerous pressing issues related to innovations in digital technology, FinTech, and AI that both nations can work on more intimately.
