Taapsee Pannu Urges Audience To Combat Objectification In Cinema

The CSR Journal Magazine

Taapsee Pannu recently emphasised the importance of audience involvement in combating the objectification of women in films. In her view, the cinematic industry frequently relies on a “demand and supply” rationale to justify the portrayal of women in a certain light. She noted that the audience’s own interactions on social media play a significant role in perpetuating this cycle.

In an interview with Zoom TV, Pannu asserted that the challenge cannot be resolved solely by actors and filmmakers. She cited how images of women are often consumed and shared online, leading to an environment in which negative portrayals can become viral. This, she argues, indicates a clear demand for such content among viewers on social media platforms.

Pannu further explained that the industry typically defends itself against criticism by claiming that it is merely catering to audience desires. She quoted a common sentiment in the industry, suggesting that producers believe if viewers are asking for specific content, it is their obligation to deliver in order to secure financial success.

Industry Mindset on Art and Craft

According to Pannu, this perspective ultimately detracts from the artistic quality of filmmaking. She stated that when financial motives overshadow creativity, both art and craft suffer, leading to a decline in the overall calibre of cinema. The actor reflected on her observations regarding changes in Indian cinema prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

She noted that the industry had been making strides to improve its standards. However, she expressed concern that it seems to be regressing. Pannu articulated her belief that filmmakers frequently place the onus of responsibility on the audience, creating a feedback loop that leaves actors without a solid counter-argument.

“No comeback is possible for actors when producers blame viewers,” she mentioned, highlighting this as a pivotal issue. Pannu believes that a shift in audience perception and behaviour is necessary for true change to occur. She reiterated that this is a collective struggle and that audiences must assist in achieving a more balanced representation of women in cinema.

Recent Criticism in Mainstream Films

Pannu’s statements come amid heightened scrutiny regarding the depiction of women in recent mainstream films, including ‘Peddi’ and ‘Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups.’ The character portrayed by Janhvi Kapoor in ‘Peddi’ faced backlash on social media for what many viewers perceived as hypersexualisation, prompting significant public discourse on the topic.

The response involved critique of various elements, such as camera work and the portrayal of romantic scenes, which contributed to negative perceptions. In the wake of this backlash, specific scenes were excised from the film, and the director, Buchi Babu Sana, issued an apology for the controversies that arose.

On the other hand, ‘Toxic’ experienced criticism even before its official release. Once the film debuted in theatres, concerns regarding the portrayal of female characters intensified, with some critics alleging that it depicted women predominantly through glamour and sexualisation in relation to male protagonists.

Pannu’s remarks contribute to the ongoing discourse regarding representation in mainstream cinema, while also highlighting the impact of audience choices in shaping content. Her insights call attention to the necessity for viewers to reconsider the types of media they engage with, share, and promote.

On a professional note, Pannu recently featured in Netflix’s ‘Gandhari,’ directed by Devashish Makhija. The action thriller also includes performances by Ishwak Singh, Chhaya Kadam, Swastika Mukherjee, and Mita Vashisht, and is currently available for streaming on the platform.
