Vice President To Meet Sri Lankan Leadership And Strengthen Ties With Indian-Origin Tamil Community

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Vice President of India, CP Radhakrishnan, is scheduled to engage in a two-day official visit to Sri Lanka from April 19, focusing on enhancing bilateral relations. This visit is seen as an important step in fostering connections with both Sri Lankan leadership and the Indian-origin Tamil community residing in the country. High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, highlighted the combination of formal diplomatic discussions and community engagements that will characterise the visit.

During this visit, Radhakrishnan aims to confer with key figures, including Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya. Meetings with the Leader of the Opposition and representatives from Tamil political parties are also on his agenda, which reflects the visit’s intent to bridge communities through dialogue.

Focus on the Indian-Origin Tamil Community

The itinerary includes a significant interaction with the Indian-origin Tamil community, which numbers approximately 1.5 million in Sri Lanka. The Vice President is set to participate in a community reception, emphasising direct outreach to this demographic. High Commissioner Jha noted that these interactions aim to deepen the relationship between the Indian government and the Tamil diaspora.

On the visit’s second day, the Vice President will travel to Nuwara Eliya, a region with a considerable population of Indian-origin Tamils. This area is known for its tea plantations and scenic landscapes. Radhakrishnan will visit housing settlements established under India’s Housing Project Phase III, which has constructed 4,000 houses, with an additional 10,000 currently under development.

This segment of the visit is intended to foster emotional connections, allowing the Vice President to engage directly with families in these developments. He aims to listen to their experiences and challenges, highlighting India’s support for the Tamil community in Sri Lanka.

Cultural Engagements And Broader Diplomatic Significance

The Vice President’s trip will also encompass a visit to the Seetha Temple in Nuwara Eliya, introducing a cultural and spiritual facet to the diplomatic mission. Jha indicated that the visit has created significant enthusiasm within Sri Lanka, with numerous leaders expressing a desire to meet the Indian dignitary during his time in the country.

This engagement follows an established trend of high-level exchanges between India and Sri Lanka. Jha pointed out that Radhakrishnan’s visit falls exactly one year after the Indian Prime Minister’s visit to Sri Lanka. In recent years, both nations have maintained an ongoing dialogue, including reciprocal visits that underline the strengthening ties.

Jha characterised this visit as a pivotal moment in reviewing the comprehensive scope of bilateral relations between the two nations. The discussions will encompass numerous aspects, including people-to-people connections and the future trajectory of their bilateral relationship. He remarked on the significance of continuing to deepen mutual ties, particularly in the context of India’s Neighbourhood First policy and the Vision MAHASAGAR framework.

As the Ministry of External Affairs has indicated, Sri Lanka is regarded as a key partner in these initiatives, reinforcing centuries-old cultural and civilisational links between India and Sri Lanka. This visit seeks to further solidify this enduring relationship, which is crucial for both nations moving forward.
