Vande Bharat Express Reduces Jammu-Srinagar Travel Time to 4.5 Hours

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recently launched Vande Bharat Express service between Jammu and Srinagar has established itself as a crucial transport option, significantly reducing travel time between these two major cities to just four and a half hours. This semi-high-speed train serves both residents and tourists, enhancing connectivity within Jammu and Kashmir and promoting the local economy.

Inaugurated on April 30, 2023, by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, this service follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier inauguration of the Vande Bharat train linking Katra and Srinagar. This rail connection is particularly advantageous given the region’s challenging weather conditions, as the train is designed to operate effectively even in sub-zero temperatures.

Onboard experiences reveal a high demand for the train, with tickets often sold out, especially during peak tourist seasons. The efficient scheduling and comfort of the service are reportedly transforming travel for many who frequently commute between these cities.

Passenger Experiences Highlight Journey Benefits

Passengers arriving at Jammu Tawi expressed palpable enthusiasm as the Vande Bharat Express approached. Many documented their journey on social media, reflecting the growing popularity of the service. As part of the onboard experience, meals, including bottled water and traditional dishes, were provided to those who opted for catering.

Interactions with various passengers indicated a strong appreciation for the new train service. One commuter, affiliated with the defence forces, noted the convenience of reduced travel times, while others expressed collective gratitude towards the government for enhancing connectivity and tourism in the region.

Transformational Infrastructure and Cultural Significance

The train journey included a notable stop at Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan Udhampur station, recognised for its strategic military significance and recently renamed to honour a fallen soldier. This venue witnessed a diversity of passengers, including many devotees en route to the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, reflecting the train’s significance in linking various cultural and religious sites.

Passengers highlighted their experiences and reactions to the Vande Bharat service, particularly as they travelled to follow up on their pilgrimage to Katra. Many remarked on the convenience this travel option affords and the ease with which they could now visit the scenic Kashmir Valley.

One of the trip’s highlights included traversing the world’s highest railway bridge over the Chenab River, prompting energetic responses from those onboard. This bridge, an engineering achievement standing at 359 metres above the riverbed, has been engineered to withstand significant seismic activity and high wind speeds, showcasing India’s advancements in railway infrastructure.

As the train concluded its journey in Srinagar, many passengers reflected on the importance of this service. The sentiment shared among travellers suggested that this venture will yield significant benefits for Jammu and Kashmir, both economically and socially. The journey fostered a sense of community and cultural connection, fundamental to strengthening local ties.
