US Treasury Secretary Warns Oman Over Strait of Hormuz Toll Plans with Iran

The CSR Journal Magazine

Scott Bessent, the United States Treasury Secretary, issued a stern warning to Oman on May 28, regarding its potential participation in a tolling system with Iran in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. He stated that the US would not tolerate any efforts that facilitate such initiatives, highlighting that action would be taken against involved parties.

In a statement shared on the platform X, Bessent specifically emphasised that the US Treasury would aggressively pursue penalties for those involved in any tolling arrangements. He underlined that Oman should be particularly aware of the repercussions for facilitating this system and cautioned all nations to reject any Iranian proposals that threaten the free flow of maritime trade.

His remarks come amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the region, with the Strait of Hormuz being a crucial passage for global energy supplies. Bessent’s comments echoed a broader message from the US government, urging nations to remain vigilant against Iranian activities that could disrupt international commerce.

US President’s Warning and Sanctions on Iran

This warning from Bessent followed a statement by US President Donald Trump, who also cautioned Oman against interference in negotiations concerning the waterway. Trump dismissed the idea of a temporary deal that would grant Iran and Oman control over this essential shipping route.

Trump’s comments included a threat implying that Oman must comply with US expectations or face severe consequences. The remarks reflect a broader strategy by the US administration to assert its dominance over maritime security in the region, particularly concerning oil and gas shipments.

In the preceding days, the US government imposed sanctions on Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority, alleging that the authority was involved in extorting commercial vessels traversing the Strait of Hormuz. This action, part of the Trump administration’s “Economic Fury” campaign, aims to exert increased pressure on Iran amid ongoing tensions.

Iran’s Response and Maritime Safety Protocols

In response to these developments, Iranian officials, including Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei, announced that Iran was collaborating with Oman to create a mechanism to ensure safe passage for ships through the Strait. Baghaei described these efforts as a “responsible step” and suggested that it was reasonable for services related to maritime safety to incur certain fees.

Additionally, Iran recently unveiled a new regulatory body tasked with overseeing operations in the Strait of Hormuz. This body, named the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), aims to manage the traffic of vessels through this key waterway, which is vital for global energy supplies.

The Iranian Supreme National Security Council confirmed the establishment of the PGSA and promoted its official X account, which is expected to provide real-time updates regarding navigation and operations in the Strait. The initiation of this authority has raised concerns among US officials, who believe it facilitates Iran’s attempts to impose tolls on international shipping.
