India has strongly objected to a New York Times report that referred to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as “Pakistani Kashmir”, reiterating that the region is an integral part of India. The Indian Embassy in the United States described the terminology as “misleading and incorrect” and reaffirmed New Delhi’s long-standing position on the issue.

The objection followed the publication of a report by the American newspaper on recent unrest and local elections in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Embassy Rejects NYT Terminology

In a post on X, the Indian Embassy in Washington said there is “no Pakistani Kashmir, only Pakistan-occupied Kashmir”.

“Misleading and incorrect headline by @nytimes. There is no Pakistani Kashmir, only Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh have been, are and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India,” the embassy said.

The mission further stated that Pakistan continues to occupy parts of Jammu and Kashmir illegally and accused Islamabad of using violence against people living in the occupied territory.

Report Focused on Unrest in PoK

The New York Times report covered recent violence and local elections in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, including clashes in Mirpur between security forces and members of the Joint Awami Action Committee.

According to the report, at least two people were killed in the latest round of violence after sustaining gunshot injuries during the clashes.

The newspaper also reported that the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan had called for an impartial investigation into the deaths.

It added that weeks of unrest had disrupted the electoral process and led to multiple fatalities across the region.

India Reiterates Its Position

The report cited claims by the Joint Awami Action Committee that several of its members had been killed during police action, while noting that those allegations could not be independently verified.

India has consistently maintained that the entire region of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, including Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, forms an integral part of the country.

Reiterating that position, the Indian Embassy said the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have always been, and will continue to remain, an inseparable part of India.
